Can Flash be used to protect pictures from being stolen and used on other sites?
Is there a way, besides "screen capture" to copy a picture that is inside a .swf file? Can the .swf be copied?

Yes - swf files can be downloaded off the internet just like any other web content.

No - once it is a .swf you can't open it and extract the contents ( i think)

It is just about imposible to prevent people from getting the graphics they view on the internet. Putting pictures into flash will make it more difficult but is a lot of work and always remember...

Where there is a will, there is a way.

This goes both ways, and as soon as someone comes up with a way to protect something, someone else will do his best to find a way to bypass it.

I've seen a very rare couple of websites where right-clicking on images was disabled. I'm sure these images would still be downloadable somehow, but if you can figure out how to disable right-clicking, that may at least be a start.

Yea that is a hard one. Basically if I can see it on my comp I can get it with paint shop pro.

I have ran into the right clicking blocking code but I beleive that they are only capable of doing that in IE. So someone with a alternate browser could get it.

As far as disabling the right click the user can still "take" the image by going into their temp folder for their browser.

I have thought about using flash also and as far as I can tell this should be the most likely way, it probably is not fool proof but the average user will not be able to break into it, and most people do not have let alone know what a screen capture program is.

I think that if you figure out who will be accessing the site you could then decide the level of security you will need. Don:t

If people are that bothered about an image they'll get it, trust me.

Anything you can see on your screen you can get by doing a print screen anyway.

That had me confused!

Em, it is impossible to stop people taking images off your site, you can make it difficult but you can never stop them.

1) Print Screen button on keyboard
2) Screen capture software such as PSP
3) Open source code, find image, open in I.E. save as normal.
4) Download flash file and import using Macromedia Flash...
5) Doanload flash file and use print screen button (gets rid of anything in html file stopping it...)

You can never stop people nicking the picture, all you can do is discourage them. If they are pay-for-prints put a watermark across them.

this question has been asked many, many times and will continue to be asked....

Reminds me of a bit of psychology:

want to know a secret? sure. then it wouldn't be a secret.

Kind of like, want to show them a picture (thru open protocols), but not give them access?

show 'em the picture, they will see...

One can actually very easily provide security on content. Only show to those allowed.
