Some case lids are a little hard to remove the first couple of times.
On my midtower I had to use a small flathead screwdriver to help me slide the lid back enough for it to slide easier.
Haven't put them back on yet either.

The indents will tell you which way to yank on them. They are most likely on rails. Sometimes the front cover has a clip on the bottom that you squeeze and you pull on it to get the front off first. Then usually there is a screw and after that you pull the side.

Also check and see if the top panel of the case is holding the sides on.

I have a mid tower case and cannot get it opened. It has indents on the rear of the side panels but they do not want to slide. It has 3 5.25 slots and 2 3.5 slots on the front. I have removed the screws from the back that were holding the sides on. I am unable to discover the manufacturer of the case.

Not knowing what brand case you have, I could hazzard a couple ideas...
Look on the back edge of the side covers for any screws (mine has two). If you remove these screws, you should be able to slide the case side back and remove it.
Look for any kind of sliding latch either on the back or bottom of the case, near the covers.
If we know the case brand and model, more info will be available...

Check for screws holding the sides on from the back of the case.
