i setup an SMTP server as part of the mail server just about a week ago. after 1 week i'm being relayed off of all the time. the mail server image in the system tray turns red when it's being used, either sending or recieving mail and norton anti-virus is up all the time scanning outgoing mail.

i turned on SMTP authentication to try to fix it but my question is this; how do these people find me?? do people/computers have nothing beter to do than to scan me and find ways to screw me?

Your server is probably listed as a spam relay now.
It happened to ours after our so called £700 a day contractor forgot to setup relay bounce in Exchange by altering the routing for email for our domain.

What email server are you running?

You will have to try and contact the correct authorities to get your IP removed but we are still waiting and its 6 months down the line now and we are still being pummeled even though we no longer exist as a relay.

but you are right

but, what he's saying is how those "hackers" finds them so fast

he's not Blacklisted yet by Mail Abuse (http://mail-abuse.org/)

he just anoyed that people are already trying to use him as an relay

My suggestion use User Authentication
or use those ANTI SPAM software like
http://enterprisesecurity.symantec.com/products/products.cfm?ProductID=164&EID=0
or something that can use this, or any other that is compatible with this http://mail-abuse.org/

ok well i will keep SMTP auth on for now....

i'll have a fix in about a week because then i'll be able to put the server behind a router (don't ask why i can't right now). let the router tell them to gobble it ;)

oh and the mail server is Argosoft Mail Server (free)
it's a nice little mail program for your home lan or to share with a few friends :)

:p

you got me there

i'm chained with a big black ball to a HellDesk, and forced to listen and condole all the lazy people not reading the manuals before doing anything

but on the other hand, well i least i get paid to have fun doing it :D

ok i found out one is able to turn off relaying and it doesn't interfere with sending email through the webmail program.... how interesting....

thanks for the info about the spam list though :)
