Ok, I got everything working with the crossover cable. Now I'm trying to set up to use my laptop to connect to the internet over the network, modem is in my desktop computer. Do I need to get information from my ISP about the IP address or am I off track. I setup my TCP/IP protocol to my NIC card in the desktop and the card in my laptop, what else do I need to do to use the internet from my laptop?
Sysopt is so much better then tech support, was on the phone for some time waiting for them to answer when the mechancial gal came on and told me to call back tomorrow :x
Thanks for the help.

Which Windows version is on the desktop and what sort of Internet connection do you have?
Really, Bob - we don't keep a member hardware database, ya know? :p

so you're trying to share your modem from one system to another? run ICS.

Sorry, running Windows 98se on both machines, using a dial up modem, LAN type peer to peer. Do I really need a sharing program to get this to work? Is there a shareware version I can get somewhere?

you can use the analogX proxy, but ICS is built into win98se. did you read the link I posted?

Yeah I use ICS but posted the Analogx as he seems to have ignored you Midknyte - ICS is my preferred choice too!!!
But it can be a bugger to get working if you misconfigure first time around.

be careful with ICS. itried it ONCE and it crashed my laptop and i had to reinstall windows.
analogx, as mentioned, is good for this sort of thing. i used it for 9 months before i got my hardware router.
print out docs with AnalogX and read, its fairly self explanatory:)

Thanks to all who replied. I did read the ICS post Midknyte but
decided on the analogx proxy because it seemed the simpler to setup for me. Every thing works great
