I am trying to figure out what type of modem to replace the Conexant HSF Softmodem in my machine..its ****. The card that its on is a Chameleon Audio/Communications card. I am wanting to go to a hard modem. Do I also need to buy a new audio card??

Does your present modem handle the sound functions also ?

Not sure, what is the best way to tell....You know most computer sellers dont provide much as far as documentation goes....

Go into device manager in control panel and see if you have separate listings for audio and modem. If the list the same card then it is a combo. Sometimes the description will say modem w/audio or something like that.

For a replacement modem, go to www.axiontech.com (http://www.axiontech.com) and get the generic Lucent chipset modem for about $20. I have a lot of luck with these, even though they are soft modems.

The Chameleon is a fancy name for a Riptide combo card. Sound and modem on one.
You do not have to buy a new sound card if you get a modem, BUT, you must know the jumpers to disable the modem portion of the card before installing another modem.
If it's a newer Chameleon, it won't have any jumpers, and some have had luck disabling the modem portion in Device Mangler and installing a different modem. Your mileage may vary.

I'll see and check back with ya...thanks

As far as a new modem...the USR 56K Performance Pro is looking pretty good..

wyvrn,

Would that soft modem work well for me even though I use a P133 64MB RAM computer?
