whenever i try to transfer files from a cdrom to my hdd, my computer freezes. no BSOD or anything, it just freezes. What can cause this? i just defragged my hdd, so now it takes a bit longer to freeze. and, the POST says my cdrom drive is only ata/33, how to i fix that?

Had this problem once copying cd - h/drive and h/drive - h/drive, but only on large files. Checked dma settings and other stuff, out of desperation (because I usually look after my h/d) I just did a scandisk on my h/drive and let it fix up an error - something about an error with size reporting... worked fine after that.
Just an idea.
Not sure on the cd ata/33 - I think mine has that as well. I just put it down to a 18mth old cd drive.

Try disabling DMA under Hardware Manager. Also, try moving CD-ROM drive to different IDE channel. If it doesn't help, post more of your system specs, and we'll try to help you with this one ...

Best Regards ...

I fixed the lockup problem. I just let windows run scandisk and it fixed a lot of errors. My cdrom is about a year and a half old, would that make it ata/33?
