Son installed a Hi Val 48x16x48 burner just after Christmas with Nero 5.5.8.2 on a Fic 503+ Win98SE 256MB Ram without a hitch. Last week it started having problems. It says it "burned successful" but it doesn't "sound" the same or will it display anything in winfile/explorer. I thought ok it just crapped out, electronics parts do brake. He got a Digital Research 52x24x52 and installed it and it does the same thing. Could software cause it to not really burn? He has a 250 watt psu and is running 2 HD plus this burner. We might be snowed in tomorrow and might give me a chance to drag out by box (real pain to get in mine where it is) and try it in there. Specs only call for a P200 and 16 Ram so I don't think that is it. Has he d/l or installed anything to screw it up...I don't know, his wife is always putting stupid stuff on it. Sorry I digress....I did have him read/play a disc I just burnt and it plays fine. Ideas? It didn't come with NERO it came with something else he prefers not to use. Thanks for steering me in any direction other than the circle I am in.

Be sure that DMA is enabled in the properties for the drives/IDE controller.

If you slaved it to a Western Digital or IBM drive, be sure that the HDD is jumpered properly. There are different jumper settings for W/SLAVE and WITHOUT SLAVE.

Scan for Spyware and viruses:

I don't know what has happened other than me setting the burn speed to a setting equal to the blank CDR's. BTFOM. That DMA setting is it under IDE controller or under CD in device manager?

In Win98, it's in the properties for the CD drive.

Have you changed your media lately,? I've found that some perform better than others.

PS, could try burning at half rated cdr speed and see what happens.
