I've got some webspace thx to my ISP but I have no knowledge on HTML,FTP etc. I'd like to create a small webpage where I can store things likes pics so I can post em on here and some files I can use at uni without having to e-mail to myself, any know a place to learn about it or got any pointers/personal knowledge?

Hi, basic html is quite easy. For the most part it is a few brackets that enclose the commands and words.

Like this..(and I think html is turned off in this forum, if it is allowed, I may screw up!..ha ha..ok..I see on the left that html is off..

Anyway, Here is a few basic things, and I'll come back later with a few web sites where you can go to learn more.

<B> tells a word or whole line of text to be in bold type. then, </B> turns that command off...they are called 'tags'

<BR> tells a line of text to wrap itself back to the left again. No </BR> is needed in this case.

<P> tells the text that a paragraph is ending, and to drop down a line to start a new paragraph. No </P> is needed...but, <BR> and <P> can be used in muliples to create a larger space between lines of text.

I have a html editor, and I like to use it, but there a lot of simple html generators that will build a page for you. The drawback to this is, if something dosn't look right, or its not what you had in mind...its diffucult to edit the darn thing without some knowledge of typing html in the first place. There are a few free html editors at some of the download sites like Tucows..ect.

Here is a sample of a basic page generated with my editor...and then you add in what is needed:

<HTML>
<HEAD><TITLE>Title of page here</TITLE>
<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="key,word,key,word">
<META NAME="description" CONTENT="Great page! Come see!">
<META NAME="generator" CONTENT="HTML Helper">
<META NAME="author" CONTENT="Your Name">
<META NAME="copyright" CONTENT="Copyright © 1998 Your Name">
</HEAD>

<BODY BGCOLOR="#FFFFFF" BACKGROUND="image.jpg" TEXT="#000000" LINK="#0000FF" VLINK="#000099" ALINK="#00FF00">

Content of page here.
Java Script also goes here when called for.

</BODY>
</HTML>

Now, here are a few other commands to do specific things, like telling the page to link to a pictire, or another site...or your email address...the color and size of the text, ect:

<FONT SIZE="4" FONT COLOR="#Hex Value">Display Text</FONT>

<A HREF="Link.html">Display Text</A>

<A HREF="Link.html"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="Picture.jpg"></A>

<IMG SRC="Picture.jpg">

<A HREF="mailto:name@domain.com">Display Text</A>

<BGSOUND SRC="sound.wav ">

All of the above are commands inclosed in tags, that tell the browser what to do, and how to read the page.

You will also need a FTP utility. FTP means File Transfer Protocal. I believe there are a few basic free FTP utilities around as well. They aren't hard to learn...it will come up when you need it by opening it like you would any application, you will have to put a user name and a password in certain places...these will be your user name and password that you have at your ISP...but, if you should want one of the free web sites, you will have to sign up and create your user name and another pass word. This could be the same as with your ISP, or different. Be aware, that most of the free web sites do not allow linking images to be used at other sites like here.

Now, if all you want to do is, have some web space to upload images to be used at forums...there are free web spaces just for that...you will not need any knowledge of html...just upload an image to their site, then link to that image from here with UBB code commands.

Good tutorials abound. I like
www.jalfrezi.com (http://www.jalfrezi.com)
www.irt.org (http://www.irt.org)

And, of course:
www.informit.com (http://www.informit.com)

This site has books available for downloading. There is a legal notice that you may download 1 copy to 1 computer, legally. Just look in the HTML section of the Free Library.

IMO, Using CSS style sheets is easiest, and best. If you go down the generator route, amaya is good(it's free from w3) or Dreamweaver if you must.

Took me a while, but it's done by knowledge, not some Visual Editor.

Best editor I've found for Windows:
http://www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia/

Why:
best search and replace function. It counts how many instances it found of an object to replace. It recognizes the differrence between upper and lower case, so scuba gets replaced with SCUBA, but brand name Scubapro doesn't get mutilated into SCUBApro.

It color codes HTML tags blue; links green, text black and most important, errors into a color known only to women and interior decorators. If you leave a > off the end of a tag, everything after that is some purple kind of color. Makes troubleshooting easier.

It's free. The author asks only one thing of you; for one day, don't snivel and moan about life. Most of us on the web live in the one country in the world where getting too much to eat is the number one health problem. So shutupalready! I am with him on this one.

Macros. You can teach it to put the html code for font color="green" /font on the screen when you press Alt-G. If you use a standard format on your web pages, this can save a ton of time and typos.

I have tried 1stPage, WebZard, all the freeware editors. I'm sticking with Arachnophilia.

Thx for all the input guys, I'll get started reading em all asap, right now I'm stuck doing two uni assignments so a little busy right now. Thx especially Bovon, been wanting to know how to use links in html so it doesn't show the source, just gives a link when you click the word. I may actually have a homepage soon then.
