Don't ask me how, but some dude got a friend of mine to run the command "deltree c:\*.* /y" on her computer. (She doesn't know anything about them, obviosly) The good news is she exited out of it before it completed wiping her hard drive, but she lost many windows files and personal files. Is there any way to recover the data. She has not done anything to the computer since entering the command, not even turned it off. Any software to recover the lost data? She is running Windows 95 by the way. Thanks in advance.

I had a real early version of Norton that had a great undelete. It was DOS only. I still have it on an old 20 meg hd but haven't looked at it in years. I would try running a WIN95 startup floppy and then a Norton Utilities CD and try it that way. Don't boot to the C: drive.
If she can start win95 ontrack has easy recovery, quite expensive but worked for me 85% of the files I accidentally wiped by removing the partition.

Ok. Thanks. I have Norton SystemWorks so I will try booting from that on her computer. If that fails I will try OnTrack. Any other suggestions?

My only other suggestion is to find the person who got her to run that command and do something evil to him.

DO NOT try to boot or add or delete files on that drive.
Take the affected drive out.... connect it to a system that already has a harddrive recovery software installed on one of IT'S OWN drives.
Try the recovery software.
DO NOT modify the contents of the original drive IN ANY WAY. if u do, it WILL NOT WORK properly duirng recovery

Registry Backup - To make a simple way to backup the Windows System Registry.
1. Registry Backup works through DOS. It uses DOS as a frontdoor to ensure there is no corruption that can be caused by Windows.
2. Registry Backup works without any user input, just restart your computer and it starts itself.
3. It is fully automated. It not only backs up the registry automatically, but restores it automatically in case of errors.

I installed Ontrack EasyRecovery onto my computer, then made a boot disk and booted her computer up with it. It found all the files, but it cannot save them to the drive the files are being recovered from. So I brought over one of my spare drives only to find out she has a SCSI drive. She has a very old '94 Micron with a 90MHz processor and a 1GB hard drive. Any suggestions? Any software that can be run from DOS to recover the files right to the same drive. Oh...she accidentally restarted the comp and windows won't load anymore. Help please!

Recover32 (win98) disk sectors recovery: Hit by a virus? Formatted
hard disk by mistake? Deleted files but can't undelete them? No
problem, as long as you remember some "keywords"
(any bytes sequences) which was appearing in your files, and you
didn't overwrite associated disk sectors with other files. (examples:
you had an address book which contained string
"myfriend @ hisserver.net", or you had a bookmark file which
contained string "www.xxx.com / y.htm", etc). Depending on the type
of your disk, you can download one of my two utilities. Recov for
FAT16 disks (DOS and windows 95) or Recov32 for FAT32 disks
(windows 98). First run a disk editor (like winhex) to locate sectors
where your files resided. In case you have FAT16 disk and use my
recov utility, you must use "logical disks" option. In case you have
FAT32 disk and use my recov32 utility, you must use "physical disks"
option. Remember the sector, and discard offset information. Then run
my disk sectors recovery. Just type its exe filename in the DOS
prompt, and the instructions (proper arguments syntax) will appear.
Few more hints. ZIP files can be recognized by string "PK" & chr(3)
& chr(4), that's bytes sequence 504B0304hex. ARJ files can be
recognized by their actual filenames in the header, like MYFILE.ARJ
string. Recov.zip (Win95 FAT16) ~4Kb
