Can't go wrong with an Asus or Sony. Both should around $30. Whats stopping you from getting a CD-RW? Can be had for as little as $20-30 more.

Oh ok, thought as much. As for Sony being noisy, no, I dont have any personal experience. All I know is a couple of people i know of recommend Sony and Asus - I'm also inclined to believe them.

Pick up a Pioneer or Toshiba DVD drive. They last forever.

If you only want CD-ROM, LG is hard to beat:

I've watched many Sony and Acer drives die while my Toshiba, Pioneer and TEAC drives keep going and going and going...

Acer I can understand, never heard of Sonys being too bad. Meh - learn something new everyday.

ASUS is good, but it makes your PC shake. Sony is good but a bit noisy..

If you can find a TEAC OEM, i guess that would be good too.
TOSHIBA drives are also good and they last.

You can also get drives from HP, they are not as fast as the ASUS and Sony drives but they perform great. And most of all, they look good...

I had two sony cdroms in the space of six month, they both pooped out with blown capacitors or some such, left a nice big scorch mark on the PCB :x

Buy a Kenwood 72x TrueX on Ebay. Ultra fast and not super loud.

Can these posts possibly be helping you to narrow it down? They are all over the place:D

My 2 cents, I have used LGs for a couple years - 1 out of 6 RMA'd. :)

I personally recommend Plextor. I have two, and both perform flawlessly.
