Ok so my dad has this old Dell 133 that is REALLY fast I’d go so far as to say it could keep pace with my Dual 450MHz machine in windows and business applications. After wondering and wondering what the heck makes this 133 so much faster then others I’ve used I discover a setting in the BIOS named "CPU Speed" it has two settings "133MHz" and "Compatible" when this is set to 133 it goes like a rocket, when its set to compatible its like any other 133. Just what does this setting do? This has been driving me crazy for years!!

It’s a Dell Dimension 133c I believe.

Also could someone recommend some good benchmarking software based on businesses application type operations?

Could be that you have a really really fast harddrive in that baby...

After dealing with a few dozen older machines 100's-266's, I've seen what you're saying.

I've never seen a "Fast" 233-266 but a couple of times I've seen a really fast P100 or P133.

Things like 40 sec boot times.

Programs opening so much faster than my HP-333 K6-2 it wasn't even funny.

I've checked the TSR's to see what was running in the foreground, and on the few 98 machines looked in system information as to what was running in the background.

Neither time yielded any clues.

A dude at work has an old P133 with Win98 and it flies.

These machines only have between 32-64mb of RAM too.

This mystery is kinda like why my 327 was faster than most others http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I had a Dell Dimension 133 w/the Dell BIOS, but I'm sure that CPU setting wasn't on mine. Software (or lack of software "load"), and OS will make a difference. Simplicity, both in hardware/software, is a speed-booster. Like Site sez, a fast HD makes as much difference as a fast CPU in some operations -- especially program loading.

Well the hardrive is good but I don't think it's a real speed demon. It was originally a 5400RPM 1gig Quantum then that died and a 7200 RPM 10gig Maxtor was installed.

This may bug me till the day I die. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

LOL http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif I don't think my dad will be giving it up any time soon. He actually just bought another off of a university.
