Hi,
A friend is running Win XP Pro. Tried to download IE6 SP1 but are unable to install due to the following message
This software has not passed windows logo testing to verify its compatability with Windows XP.
Have tried installing IE6 SP1 from a PC World CD, MS download page etc etc.....
There is something on the system that is preventing the update.
any ideas?????
thanks

Make sure they have administrator rights. (Not using a user profile with restricted rights.)
Since it sounds like you might be relaying info, here's more than one thing to check at a time.

Make sure your friend does not already have the XP Service Pack installed. If he does, then IE6 SP1 is also installed which would account for the error message: Press Win-Break keys (System Properties/General tab) and read what is says under System. If it shows Service Pack 1 then they also have IE6 SP1 installed. (And check in IE, help, about. version.)

Is Yahoo companion installed? If yes uninstall it. And go to IE/Tools/Internet
Options/Advanced and uncheck the option to Enable third party browsing
Extensions. Don't know why, but some people have had trouble with Yahoo installed, or other third part BHO's (Browser Helper Objects)

The error can occur if the Cryptographic Services was disabled. Please click Start. Click Run. Type Services.msc and press Enter. Enable "Cryptographic Services" and this may fix the error.
To check if Cryptographic Services is running, click start/run/command and enter net start | find /i "crypt" It will be listed if it's running.

Have them look at the "active setup log.txt" file (and also the "active setup log.bak" file if it exists). It’s pretty long, but look for failures. It can give good clues as to why it failed.

As long as the Service Pack was not already installed, check out his KB article:
How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in
Windows XP (Q318378) (Note: Does not apply to IE SP1)

If this doesn’t do it, post back, a couple of other long-shot things, but more involved.
