I was recently building my new pc and remembered something about applying a thermal compound to the cpu kernel. Is this absoloutly necessary, and if so what kind of compound do i need, any good recommendations??
Cheers

Yes, it is a good idea to use a quality thermal compount between the heat sink and CPU core.

What it will do for you is fill the slightest bit of gap between the cpu core and heat sink. It also helps in the transfer of heat from the cpu to the hs.

alpha_man:

Artic Silver II seems to be in vogue now, and I can write that it's worked fine for me. You can read about it and buy it here:

Look under "Thermal Goop / Tape" on left side of Webpage.

PS: RadShack thermal grease likely works as well. (My opinion.)
