I'm using a Diamond Supra Sonic II 112k dual analog modem. It uses 2 phone lines and links them together to act like one line. I average around 8k-11k (compression of course) which is noticably faster than plain ol' 56k dialup. My ISP is Connectstar. They charge $24.95 a month for dual analog service; 3 email addresses; 10MB of space, etc etc. It's a great deal for the speed. If you sign up, just tell them I referred you. I don't think it'll matter, but I know some people that work there http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.connectstar.net/services/index.html Graham 06-24-2000, 01:16 PM Diamond & 3Com (USR) are the two I would recommend. ISDN is very expensive (116 ukp just to convert the line !!!!) and we are only just getting ADSL, and the like here in the UK, so 56k is about the best available jman01pa 06-24-2000, 04:12 PM Get an external US Robotics (3Com). You cant go wrong. J http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Jeff7 06-26-2000, 09:56 PM www.phoebemicro.com (http://www.phoebemicro.com) I think they have them. I have a Rockwell based ISA modem from them, and according to this site (http://computingcentral.msn.com/topics/bandwidth/speedtest50.asp), I am getting about 38.5Kbps, and 4.7KB/sec on a 56K dial-up connection. Downloads on Getright have on occasion held steady at 5KB/sec, and sometimes, gone nuts(somehow) to 13KB/sec for hours on end. I have already watched the Data Received section on the Dial-up networking, and it does look to be going at that speed. I did time it once though, with an FTP progrm - downloaded 282,624 bytes in 35 seconds, which comes out to 7.886KB/sec - 64599.7bps. I don't know how, but I won't complain. But anyway, I am pretty sure that Phoebemicro still offers hardware modems - they are usually packaged in boxes with a blue sky and cloud background, so you know what to look for at a computer show. Just check those boxes carefully before buying. brandon184 06-26-2000, 10:02 PM I agree with jman01pa.. Can't go wrong with one of those things! - Brandon.. Win_98 06-26-2000, 10:49 PM It seem like everyone is now using sofeware based modem. There more likely to be conexant soft56K These modem is very reliable, never a problem except slow your computer down a bit Very cheap you can get these sucker for about 15-18buck at your local computer shop Get the more expensive kind say 29.99 and you get better performance when connected Like they saying goes, you get what ya paid for. Paid 14.95, hehe you going to have a hell of a time getting it to work right, the darn thing is a modem emulator making this loud retarded sound like a person imitating a connection. It just ain't good enought. ANTONIO E GUERRA 06-27-2000, 05:13 AM I have a hardware modem with a Texas Instruments chip and I get connected at 50,000 with no disconnections. I only paid $40.00 at a local store. I had once a Cirrus logic hardware modem and it was also great! Avoid all pci modems, most of them are really software modems and they will slow down the system.Unfortunately modems with Hsp, Conexant, Pctel, usr winmodem are so popular that it is almost impossible to avoid them. As I read, there is no mistake with an external modem (UsRobotics, Diamond, etc.)Good luck! U-96 05-11-2001, 02:38 PM I have been very happy with my exteranl Olitec Speedcom2000 v2, connected at 45333bps at the moment. Latency is also better for online gaming than my old HCF softmodem. Richard_Cranium72 05-11-2001, 04:15 PM I have an Elsa External serial modem, works good. Got it at www.buy.com (http://www.buy.com) for a song. They are much more now. Check this link to an Intel modem, the second reply quotes Intel saying their modem is NOT a software unit, that's how I read it anyway. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum10/HTML/001435.html Cruez 05-12-2001, 12:56 AM I have a Conexant HSF modem in my system...its ****..takes about 3-4 tries to connect to my ISP, plus it frequently disconnects in V.90 mode and k56 mode. In V.34 I only get 28.8 connection...Garbage I think... cedar2 05-12-2001, 10:19 AM Some modem tests here: http://www.zdnet.com/products/stories/benchmark/0,8824,39235-1567,00.html Starts at Diamond Supra, but you can move about to the brands tested and to other tests from the links on the page. Toddly 05-12-2001, 10:43 AM I have been looking on Ebay at US Robotics ISA hardmodems. There are many that are preowned or surplus and they are a good price. Anyone have any experience with a purchase of these? You can get one for around 25.00. zskillz 05-12-2001, 11:06 AM how did this thread come back up? the original post is almost a year ago... -Z Sixpac 05-12-2001, 04:10 PM I think Cruez was cruising!
