Ive bin a hard core gamer for al long as i can remember. back to the 300 buad hayes days playing adventure games over the landline with text for graphics. Ive had alot a whole lot of modems. Seems to me the best one for online gameing to date has been my hayes 2400buad external (doh! just kidding) I like the 3comUsrobotics external v90 x2/voice fax modem sportster I believe it says on the bottom, cant go wrong with a 3comusr although they run a little high in the price range comparitivly speaking. I dont have the option of anykind of high speed access and haven't, although ive been lookng into the sattelite deal, anyone have any experience with a satelite downlink and a landline out. looks like the $ for this type of set up has gone way down in the last 3 years and i was considering it although the hardware goes 4 around 400-500$ and 75$ and up permonth depending on the bandwidth, hmmmmmmmmm.

toke out.....

AndreRIO....

I have used a lot of differant modems over the last several years and I still go back to 3Com(USR Sportster & Courier) internal and external....

tokrz....

The Huges (Direct PC) (http://www.hns.com/) system from the people I've talked to is a little slow(150k down- like that would be slow compaired to my 56k,lolol) at times and so is Starband (http://www.starband.com/) , but Starband has a new system out that does not require a "Landline" ISP for about the same price.

3com makes excellent modems, and fast ones too. But be sure you have a very CLEAN phone line and very CONSTANT power.

Else, you'll end up like me, with a modem that hangs up everytime the refrigerator starts/stops or lights are turned on/off.

Never had a problem with my AOPEN ISA 56k internal. Always connects and no hardware conflicts. Has jumper settings in case plug and pray does not work.

Ditto what Foggy said...

"USR Courier V-Everything External, The most reliable modem I ever used."

I've been through a few dozen types until 2 years ago.

I've downloaded almost 24/7 for almost 1.5 years straight with it. Back when Altopia ruled the Newsgroup scene. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Now mine has been shelved for over a year, since the Road Runner cable modem service came to town!

I think directpc is a dead horse, and that the 2 way satellite system prices are going to come down a lot, and soon. Probably the most important thing if you get one is the guy who puts it in...give him a drink, let him use the head, whatever, cuz you want him to take care of you later.
