A friend of mine has an HP 8570 pc and thinks his cpu fan is about to go out (noise). He's bought a replacement, and released the pins on the bad fan, but the pins aren't allowing the fan to be lifted out. There isn't any help at all on any of the HP sites.

He's afraid to force it and is wondering if there's any trick involved here. Can you give us any ideas?

Thanks,

Gary DeJarnett

it could be that the thermal gunk they used has just hardend up and your going to have to pop it lose

BUT more than likly the heat sink is glued to the chip HP was bad about that
I would leave the heat sink atached and just replace the fan it's self not the whol;e thing

Thanks for your help, Scotter.

Please excuse my ignorance (I'm a professional programmer, obviously not a hardware guy), but I'm not sure what you mean about "just replace the fan itself and not the whole thing". The replacement fan appears to just be one single unit; is there something I'm supposed to be able to take apart?

Thanks again,

Gary

DeJarnett, maybe you can describe what you are looking at. Most cpu heat sinks have a fan attached with screws to the heat sink. If this is the case, does the new heat sink and fan appear to be the same as the old one?..if so, and you can remove the fan from the old one by taking out the screws, you should be able to install the fan "only" from the new unit. There is a chance the fan is attached to the cpu heat sink with a clip-on arrangement...but, in some way, it should be removable from the heat sink.

I don't recall ever seeing a fan that was 'glued' to a heat sink.

What kind of cpu is in the machine, if you know or can find out. What age is it...what speed is the cpu. Sometimes, this will tell us a little bit about the system.

Thanks for the reply Bovon.

Sorry I haven't been more clear on this problem. My friend is 50 miles away, so I too, am trying to solve this via long distance.

Anyway, they called yesterday and said that someone locally was finally able to get the other fan out and replace it, so there's no more need in any of us continuing to waste time on the problem.

I do appreciate your willingness to help, though.

Thanks again,

Gary
