Just installed my 48x24x48 Liteon cd/rw in my new pc running nero andWinXP. Install looks to be good, will format and copy a disk. The problem is that it will not read all the files that my old pc made( Win98se and direct cd)on my back up cd/rw. Some of the folders say folder empty when I put the mouse over them. There are some files I need to update my new pc like address book, favorites, newsgroups, aol buddys and such. The files are still there when the cd is put in the old machine. Why won't xp read them, or is it a nero thing. Thanks for any info on this.

Some things that cause a cd to be unreadable include:
dirty cdrom - clean surface
too many scratches
low quality media
incorrect disc format
You may need to install the UDF-Reader to read Packet Writing discs.

I believe the udf reader is installed. The cd is scratched, but why does it read fine on my old system? The drag and drop feature also seems to work fine. Oh, also when I put it in the dvd drive it gave a error message saying the disk was corrupted but I don't believe this is the case. fangoria

The new drive may be more sensitive or it may need a calibration. Hard to tell.

Clean the CD well, being carful not to contribute more scratches. The polish it with one of those restorer (polymere) products. I simply use RainX (like for windshields). If the new drive still does not read it, copy it WITH THE NEW DRIVE. Limit the write speed to 4X and see if the new drive will read the copy.
Make absolutely sure there are no other applications running or tasks scheduled.
Good luck and let me know if this helped. BTW: I know what you are thinking...No, usually the software provided with the other drive won't work with your new one. Copying software that is purchased separately, will.

I will give it a try, Have buffed music and playstation games at work and they have worked. Tried to read my data disk on my dads pc(basicly the same as mine) read it the same with certain folders showing empty, then when I put it back into the drive after tring other cd's it would not read at all, got error message and such. Would not read in my pc either, won't read in old system now either, disk is stuck sounds like it is trying to continually read and is stuck in a loop. Thanks for the info, I will try it

Not on my windshield or a CD that you're trying to restore. Just follow the instructions on the bottle (after application; buff the haze with a clean, soft cloth.)
But even if it did, once he makes a copy that works, who cares. He only has to get it to read once.

The buffing didn't help, cd is totally un readable. The place I bought the pc and burner from told me not to use the packet writing software if I will be using cd on different systems. They said to just use cd creator and the nero on the new system and close out the cd-r. They said that the packet writing software has always be unreliable. I will give it a try and let you know.

OK, I used cd creator deluxe 4.0 and did a data burn from the old pc. Closed out the session and put cd-r in the new pc, works great. Now I can transfer files to the new HD. Might still use incd on new system to back up files for use on new systwm only, this should be fine. Thanks for all your help.
