I have a rather general question about VPN... how does communication from my destination host change when I route traffic through a VPN? Does this affect running services on my PC?

Jimstep 02-12-2003, 09:53 PM Try this link for an explanation of how a VPN works http://www.howstuffworks.com/vpn.htm I use a VPN to talk to my business from home and do not have any problems with it interfering with my pc activity. Both sides (routers) of each tunnel carries the unique key. This allows me to keep communication ports open for application software and software licensing without the concern of my ports being "open" to the world. I'm not sure there is any advantage to a VPN router unless you are using the encrypted tunnels between host and client machines. It would function as any router would. I do not experience slowdown through the encrypted tunnels presently (2.1+ Mps throughput), but I have had trouble with slow throughput on some of the previous firmware releases. SysOpt.com
