Uhh..Well I dont know anything else bout the comp but while someone was complaining about thier input 'lag' on thier comp, I optimized thier swapfile and Vcache for them, and in doing so, hadda inquire how much RAM they had, and they told me 62MB. I didnt really think about it til now..Doesnt ram come in numbers like 2,4,8,16,32,64, and doubles like so? Im not sure about older SIMM's or anything, but to get 62 ram outta this, the least u can have is 5 sticks...32+16+8+4+2. Uhh...No board has 5 RAM slots..howd they get 62MB?

AuraEdge,

They probably have 64 megs but and also have an onboard video card that uses shared memory and have it set to 2 megs leaving 62 megs for the OS.

It could be that someone loaded smartdrv in the autoexec. If it doesn't have a windows cache memory setting command, it will lock it the dos cache memory setting and not release the memory to Windows.

I set my virtual memory at 384 mb. It seemed to help performance and reduce fragmentation, but how do you change Vcache settings, and what are the benefits? I have also heard that setting the role of your machine as network server will improve performance, is this true??

They say it does...
U set vcache by running 'sysedit' and selecting system.ini. After that u find the link that says [vcache] an write in under it
MinFileCache=x
MaxFileCache=x
Replace the x's with 1/4 of your ram then multiplying it by 1024.
In thier system (62MB) I told them to put in 15872 for both fields (to prevent resizing)
this is the amount of kb of RAM that will be used for holding files n stuff.

The usual recommendations for Vcache is 1/4 your RAM and the usual rec. for Virtual memory is 2x your RAM.
And RobRich - The optimizing of this stuff solved thier lag problem. So its not another problem.

Solved their lag problem?
Could you provide some info on this as i've played with the v-cashe settings but i wasn't looking at lag problems during benchmarking.

Are you talking about system lag or net/network lag?

Get Cacheman to control your vcache settings. It's easier and more flexible than playing with your Windows systems files.

**** UMA robbing RAM for video....

Should be a crime...

I agree w/ Mntsnow. I have 48 megs w/ four going for the onboard video.

Thanks for the VCache info.

..cacheman is just another program using up RAM that could otherwise be used to avoid using the Virtual Cache. Cacheman doesnt optimize your settings for the ammount of RAM that you have..Just gives you a number. I just took a look at Cacheman, and its settings are no where near what I put them at (which could be a good thing or a bad thing)
And she was talking about system lag. After fixing up her Vcache and Virtual, it eliminated MOST of the lag (64 RAM still doesnt cut it tho...so shes gunna be left wit some lag nonetheless)
Do all integrated Vcards do this? cuz i dont think it did that on mine! My old board had a 32MB SIMM on it and windows reported 32MB dispite the 1MB Video card so generusly integrated into the Mobo (grrrr)

This "disappearing ram" is exclusive to mobos that are have the Unified Memory Achitecture. There's no separate video ram as the onboard video just steals memory from the socketed DIMMs/SIMMs. Oh yeah, and it sucks too! I'm speaking from experience....

In the very old days you could get 1/4 RAM and so on.
