Alright, it's kinda depressing that there's still things that I have absolutely zero idea about.

Alright, so, I'm ordering a new hard drive tomorrow, along with some other stuff. I narrowed my choice down to 2 hard drives, one is a Maxtor 40GB 7200 RPM IDE drive, and the other is a 18.4GB Atlas 10K III, Ultra 160 SCSI, 8MB Buffer, 10,000RPM. Now, considering that my SCSI knowlegde is virtually non-existent, I ask myself questions such as: What the hell is an 80 pin connector? Am I going to be able to install this at all? Is there anything in the fridge? Where did I put those car keys?...among other silly things. Now, there's a 68-pin, and a 80-pin version of this drive.

Do I need a scsi controller or something to install a SCSI drive? God, I feel so helpless.

Hmm, well my motherboard is an asus A7V333, and I'm running all my drives as separate drives, unpartitioned. I'm using 3 drives at the moment, an 8gb, a 60gb, and some old 2 gb drive. They are by Seagate, Maxtor, and unknown respectively. They're all 5400rpms. I'm planning to use the new drive as my primary drive, mainly for the access time, and I'm getting 2 more large IDE drives in the future, so I'll have plenty of storage space.

I've looked at some basic info on SCSI drives online, but that didn't help me much because I don't really know what I'm looking for. If I have a choice I'll go for the SCSI drive, if I can't use that I'll go for the IDE instead. Also, if I need to buy any additional parts for the SCSI, such as additional ribbon cables or whatever, mention that. I'll need to order it along with the drive. It's OEM, so it comes as is.

Whew...I hope anyone can understand what I'm saying here. Heh, alright, I'll be waiting for some computer elites to save my day.

Thanks already,
I'll be checking in,
DrakeV

Edit
Also, am I going to be able to boot from the SCSI drive? I was thinking of putting my OS on that, so if I can't boot from it, then I guess it's not useful. I'm running XP by the way. Thankers!

Yah you need a SCSI card and you can boot from it. Go here (http://www.hypermicro.com/store/index.htm) and scroll down to the LSI section. Look at the $89 jobbie. That's what you need.

If you don't mind an IBM SCSI drive, hypermicro.com has a special which gives you a free LSILogic controller card with the purchase of an IBM SCSI drive. I just bought it, mention Promotion SR-Z15.

Be aware that the promo specifies that you get one of the OEM 15K IBM drives and that there is no cable included. Still, it's less than $240 total and a good deal. I bought it. ;:)
