The nice thing about cable is that your online once you launch your comp.
How can i achieve something similar with adsl ?.
I dont want to put a short cut to some site in the startup, are there any apps out there ?, or any tricks in WIN98SE ?.
Thanks,
cm.

Depends on how your DSL is set up.
If you have a static IP, then you're most likely on all the time.
If you use some flavor of PPPoE or PPPoA, then you have to log-in using some software package. I've used Enternet300 and was able to configure it to save my username an password. Then, I just had to drop a shortcut into my startup folder. Every time I logged into Windows it automatically connected me to the DSL.
The other solution would be a broadband router like the Linksys BEFSR41. The software built in to these device will login automatically and is pretty good at keeping the connection alive.

I have a dynamic IP.
I dont want to have to put a shortcut in my start-up folder.
That alternative with the router sounds interesting.
Or maybe there is some software out there that i could use to connect automatically at start-up ?.
Thanks,
cm.

i don't recommend enternet 300 software by any means, unfortunately if you have pppoe adsl then that's probably the connection software that you have received along with the dsl modem. that's what we were sent and i wasn't satisfied with it. instead, i'm using raspppoe and not only is it more reliable, but the connection is faster as well. raspppoe can be configured to automatically connect when it detects any type of internet connection being made so you could put a shortcut to pretty much any type of internet application in your startup group and have it autoconnect that way. just an idea.

Well the connection is made automaticaly when i click on shortcuts or when i launch a browser.
There must be something out there to allow me to connect to the internet during start up ? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif.

Yeah, I don't like to have to do it either, but I have IE in my startup folder. I had Morpheus in my startup, or I mean I would have if I used such software (big smile http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif ), but I figured that was a major bandwidth tie-up to start with every time.
When I had cable modem couple of years back like you said it was just "always there" whether I had logged on or not. I liked that much better, but I like the speed of DSL much better than the old cable account.
Anyway, good luck.

I'm with you Psyclone - Enternet 300 is a bloated, buggy, slow POS. Those software engineers should be ashamed of themselves. Especially when some guy in Germany can, by himself, design a stable, lightning quick, 100k app that does the same thing....
club_med - What's the big deal about putting a shortcut in your startup folder?

Well there are a number of reasons i dont want to do that, the main one is that it annoys me to have the browser startup all the time.
Granted its one way of doing it, but i am hoping there is someone here at Sysopt who might now of some little app that conects you to the net during the startup.
Thanks people,
