I just installed Windows XP and installed a new 56k modem but I can't connect to the internet. Windows recognized the hardware and the driver seemed to install just fine. When I dial I hear a click like the modem is initializing the call but I don't hear anything after that (new speakers just hooked up so might be a sound issue there). It says that it's dialing...after about 30 seconds it stops and says that it couldn't make a connection with the other computer. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Have you tried switching the phone lines on the modem? I always get it wrong when I hook them up.
Just a thought.

Yeah, I done that, man!
If that wasn't it, have you tried the phone dialer in Accessories?
If it does dial out, maybe check your ISP dial-up settings.

Yeah it dials out. I got the speakers working so I can hear the modem trying to communicate with the ISP. It does that for a while and then it disconnects with the message that there is no response. This is the same number I'm dialing on my other computer and it works fine there.

Check with your ISP and see if there is another dial in number you can try.

Being it's new I guess it couldn't be dead. Had a US Robotics that acted like that but it had been spiked.
Any diagnostics come with the card? Some companies have numbers to dial that send back signals for checking operations.

Check the modem using the query modem option to check and see what commands it supports.
There is an AT command that you can run from hyperterminal - cant remember offhand which one it is at6??? that prints a list of the last commands and the line quality.
Setup the error log in modem properties and connect - analyze the log and it should give you an idea of why it cannot connect.
Sounds like the ISP - Check your username , password etc.
