Lost a WU thinking I was hosed. I had good cause just reloaded the puter and everything is going haywire:) Mutant_Donkey 02-09-2003, 01:06 AM wondering, are you using the windows graphical gui version or the CLI client hidden with setihide or something else? the GUI version can be anywere from 50-300% slower than cli smithdw 02-09-2003, 04:29 AM Originally posted by Mutant_Donkey wondering, are you using the windows graphical gui version or the CLI client hidden with setihide or something else? the GUI version can be anywere from 50-300% slower than cli I'm running the CLI installed as a W2K service on all my systems at work and SETIHide on my system at home. I really need to setup about a 500-750 WU cache (2-3 days) on one of the systems. Every time SETI has network problems it really trashes my WU/day count. cment 02-09-2003, 02:20 PM Whats the difference from the GUI and the CLI verisons? smithdw 02-09-2003, 03:38 PM The GUI (Screensaver) version has a lot of pretty graphics that cause the SETI software to run a lot slower, since it takes a bit of CPU power to generate all the graphics. The CLI version doesn't have any graphic display and runs in the background. It processes a WU much faster (almost twice as fast) and there are programs like SetiHide that can control the CLI version and also provide a WU cache to keep WU's on your system to continuously process when the SETI network is down. The CLI versoin can also be installed as a Windows service in W2K & WXP and probably NT also. Running SETI as a service is great for a lot of machines like I have since it starts up when Windows starts up and runs completely hidden in the background without any type of display or indication of it running. Overall the CLI version is much better for getting the maximum number of Work Units processed. You just don't get the pretty pictures. cment 02-09-2003, 09:55 PM Is there an actual CLI version or is it a big process. I don't use the screensaver ****. Just the little icon in the tray. It does give me the cool colorful map after I double click it, but very rarely do I. I want to crunch, not interested in color:) got my sight set high:D Also, if anyone ever finds anything cool in there crunchin, how do we find out? smithdw 02-10-2003, 04:52 AM The CLI client is here: ftp://alien.ssl.berkeley.edu/pub/setiathome-3.03.i386-winnt-cmdline.exe You can get SetiHide here: http://www.scheit.de/seti/setihide.html Most everyone here runs SetiHide to manage a work unit cache and to give some local statistics. I also use Seti MultiSpy at work since there are about 60 machines that run Seti. It's here: http://www.mirwoj.opus.chelm.pl/seti/ I have also setup Seti as a Windows 2000 service so it will run completely hidden and will automatically run at system startup. The instructions are here: http://www.geocities.com/lwddemon/setiservice/ Hope this helps. Running the CLI version is much faster. RampageIII 02-10-2003, 10:03 AM http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=125034 As smithdw has noted, the screensaver is quite slow. You can set it to run in the background (if you have a permanent internet connection), but be sure to disable the screensaver in desktop properties (that means all screensavers). BTW, the Seti@Home site is down right now. One of the benefits of SetiHide is that you can download extra work units (cache) to run during the infrequent down times, or to run offline. SysOpt.com
