I’m having problems with the dial-up Internet connection on a new, home built, Windows XP Pro OEM (Service Pack 1) system. I can connect to my provider, but even though it autodetects the DNS servers, I get “Not Found” errors when I try to browse or access e-mail. I’ve tried both the IE 6 that came on the XP CD and Netscape 7.01. I can connect to my ISP with my 98 machine.
I was able to log on and browse one evening last week once I got the system assembled. The next evening, I couldn’t browse. The only network related configuration change I made in between was to install the modem driver (Diamond Supra SST) from the CD; the one time the connection worked, I was still using the “Generic SoftK56" Windows driver. I removed the Diamond driver and let Windows redetect it as generic again, and I used System Restore to go back to a point before I installed the Diamond driver. Finally, I replaced the modem with a USR 56k PCI modem, so I don’t think it is the device itself. In the past week, I’ve re-installed Windows (over top of the original installation, not a wipe) and run SFC. I’ve completely uninstalled McAfee Firewall and disabled Internet Connection Firewall. Content Advisor is not enabled Internet Security is set to low (shouldn’t effect Netscape anyway, should it?). I’ve repeatedly deleted the Internet connection and re-run the connection Wizard (my ISP tells me the default setup, PPP with QoS and dynamic IP should work). My provider suggests wiping the hard drive and starting over at this point, but I would like to find out where I went wrong so I don’t repeat the same error.
I had ICS installed but not enabled on my networked 98 system, I think something in XP is stubbornly still trying to find the Internet connection on my LAN. I can recreate the same behavior on the 98 machine (connect to ISP but can’t resolve hostnames) if connection sharing is turned on in XP. I originally had both an built-in Gigabit NIC on the motherboard and another in a PCI slot (in preparation for using this machine as a bridge to a wireless broadband connection). Even with the PCI NIC gone and the onboard NIC disabled in the BIOS, I still get “not found” messages when I try to browse. I can ping my provider’s DNS servers from the command prompt as well as the provider’s network IP, but no machines beyond the provider’s network, either by name or IP. NSLookup also fails to resolve addresses. I’ve tried connecting to another dial-up provider with the same results.
I originally had the built in NIC configured with a static IP (192.168.0.x private range, to match the rest of the network). Later, I noticed static IP required a static DNS (I don’t remember getting this the first time) and I reset all my Windows machines to dynamic IP’s on the NIC’s (169.254.25.x Class B private). This may also explain why my browser can’t find DNS.
Below are reports from the network diagnostic tools built into XP, followed by the results from the same commands on the working 98 machine for comparison. My provider’s DNS IP’s have been intentionally obscured, I don’t know how they would feel about them being posted.

I know this is a lot of information, but I’m hoping someone can find a clue to my problem in it. Can you suggest other tools I can run to gather more data or a more appropriate forum? Is thewre something in Admin Tools that might help? Thanks for any assistance.
