networking and lan

Well i got a laptop which i want to connect to my existing desktop pc, i think this is a LAN.

Basically i want to have both pc's share the files and folders on both.

Both the laptop and the pc connect to the internet through a netgear router, via a cable modem.

So i have the internet connection for both but i dont know how to share the files. Both pc's have windows xp.

So can anyone give me a link to a tutorial with step by step instructions, with images if possible to do this?
