I have a Gateway PC with a Tabor 3 mobo - 4000532, PIII-450, slot-1, and the newest BIOS I can find at Gateway - P14. I am trying to install a slot-1 adapter and 1.3 GHz Celeron, but can't get to the part of the BIOS to change the processor or multiplier or anything. I tried the configuration jumper and all I could do is change passwords.

Anyone know of a way to get this mobo to recognize the other chip?:(

I bought the 1.3 to try to go cheap on an upgrade and I think I threw my money away. - LOL

Live and learn. The big PC makers have custom motherboards and BIOS that limit the multiplier to a narrower range than the original part. They don't want you to upgrade - they want you to buy another PC.

My guess is that they failed and that you won't buy another. ;)

Hmm... I have this exact motherboard, down to the part number 4000532. Here is a list of the changes for the last 2 updates for this board.

P14-0019
Correct W98 Device Manager warning on PS/2 mouse when only mouse present is USB.
NOTE: only works when Legacy USB is disabled.
Date stamp set to 11/04/99 to prevent ACPI OS install.

P13-0018
Change ACPI DSDT and RSDT OEM_REVISION fields from 0 to 1 for W2K Ready.
Change \_PFAN._STA 0xFF return value to 0x01 for W2K Ready.
Revise processor updates for 681.
Add processor update for 683.
Correct "A" and "E" processor suffix display.
Display processor speed up to 1200MHz.
Date stamp set to 11/03/99 to prevent ACPI OS install.

Since P14 doesn't appear to have enabled a higher display for processor speed, it looks like 1200mhz is the most this board will recognize. :(

Thanks Omega. I spent $5 too much to get the 1.3!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL. Any idea how to make the board think this is only 1.2GHz?

Is my mobo supposed to automatically recognize any chip speed up to 1.2? I can not find anyway to change anything in the BIOS with regard to CPU, fsb, voltage, etc.

I need to speed my 450 up somehow!!!

These Celerons IGNORE the multiplier setting from the motherboard anyway. So if you have a problem there, it's not this.

As Peter indicated, there may be other obstacles preventing the celeron 1.3ghz to work in this board. One may be the speed, but what I'm wondering is if you have a Tualatin Celeron (as opposed to a Coppermine, which would work in this board).

Depending on where you bought it, it should say FCPGA or FCPGA2. If it is FCPGA2, then it is a Tualatin. Another thing to look for is the cache size. Coppermine celerons have 128k cache, whereas the Tualatin celeron has 256k cache. Another thing is to look for the s-spec code on the processor, which will look something like SL5ZF. Using this, you can either search www.google.com or www.intel.com to find out which processor you have.

If it is a Tualatin, then the only way I have seen it work is with the PowerLeap PL-iP3/T (http://www.powerleap.com/Products/iP3T.htm) adapter, but the cost of this is not worth the money, and there are no guarantees that it will work on your board.

If you still want to upgrade the processor using this board, you can take a look on www.pricewatch.com and click on CPU. Remember that the Coppermine Celeron has 128k cache, so look for one of these.

I checked the box and I got a SL5ZJ, 256 K L2 cache --Tualatin. Guess I'm screwed with this mobo. Soooo....

Should I spend $70 on a 1.1 G, 128 K Coppermine or spend $100 on a newer mobo that I can oc? I need an ATC form factor for my case. Any suggestions?

I really appreciate the help. Wish I had looked for a forum before I dropped the money....

Cheap and very good.

Thanks Bill and everyone for the help and advice. I purchased the Soyo TISU mobo just now. In a few days I'll let you know how it worked. May join the ranks of oc'ers soon!!!!!!!!
