Hey, I got a question. I just installed a new 56K modem into my Compaq Presario 4528 (kinda old :|), but when i check my connection speed, its still running at 36.6kbps. Can anyone help me out with this? Ive heard all that stuff about the phone lines slowing them down, possibly being old, but then again ive heard other stuff.

It's dependent on line condition and your ISP. Frankly, a 36.6 connection isn't that bad. Realize that a 36.6 modem couldn't actually reach 36.6, so you're ahead of the game.

Some modems are more sensitive to line noise than others too.

Well thank ya :) Ahh so it DOES matter which ISP you have. I was never sure about that.
But I'm not sure what ya mean by "Some modems are more sensitive to line noise than others too."

Your modem is a cheap little WinModem. A $300 USR Courier V.Everything would leave it for dead in actual use.

Ah so I may just need a different modem. Thanks for the help.

I have several questions. How long is your phone cord going from back of PC? (should be 6-8 or less). Do you have a lot of phone devices hooked up on the same number. Fax machines, answer machines, other phones around the place ?? What OS are you running? Do you have any services on the line such as voice mail? Did you check the mfgr site for the latest modem drivers? Are you using any init strings?

I work for an ISP.

Donīt be overly concered with the reported modem speed. The way it operates and opens the webpages is all that matters. I have winmodems that report 52K but in actual use my US Robotics external 33.6 opens pages better at connected 33.6K. UsR and some others are HARDWARE modems, they are independent and donīt use the motherboard resources to operate. They hang on like **** on a Marines blanket!

Just a few mins ago i moved my desktop around to where my cpu was closer to the phone jack and got a shorter one. Its 7 ft. before it was more that 14 ft :S. All i have hooked up to the same number is this modem and my telephone. It has a built in answering machine and still uses only one cord. Nothin but those. Im running Windows 98 SE right now, but im thinking of upgrading to xp. No services like voicemail or anything. Although I do use the Callwave Internet Answering Machine. Would that have any effect? I havent heard of the mfgr site, so could you give me an address for that? And lastly im not using any init strings.

How exactly does one browser load pages faster then another. I thought this was all dependant on your ISP with all their compressions and algorithems and connection speeds.

Some browsers will load the text and display it before loading all of the pictures. IE waits until it has everything.
