Hi
I'm trying to find good (price/performance) anti-virus and firewall software for a Windows 2000 Advanced Server.
What would you guys recommend???

I don't think that you will find a combination package suitable for Advanced Server. You may also find that a software firewall gets hard to manage as you connect more nodes to your server.
Norton Professional is the standard AV software for the enterprise. I recommend it highly. Zone Alarm is a powerful free firewall, but it must be mastered.

Bill has the Right Idea
but if i recall, NAV 2003 will not install in server enviroment
so i think it's best if you get Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition
NAV CE
current versions are 7.6 and 8.0
that is a Server and Client AV software made for Server/Clients enviroment with Central management from any PC
work with all OSes
it even works in Win3.11 and DOS !! :x
LOL :r

Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition is what I currently have running for my server. I would not recommend anything else.

NAVCE 7.5 here. I'm still waiting for the 7.6 upgrade.
One of the best parts is the management console. It can tell you if anyone in your network has a virus from one screen. very handy.

We're running the www.nai.com Netshield platform for our servers. Updates on clients running the Multiplatform McAfee Vshield client software can be scheduled to run automatically every week (to co-incide with new DAT file releases), and they can be configured to update off an internal server, to keep I-net traffic down.
We swear by it here, we've NEVER had a virus go un-detected in over 2 years.

I have been using various forms of Norton for years. What Logan mentioned about Netshield is worth looking into. Personally, I was never a fan of Mcafee. However, visiting the website, I must say I am impress. If for some reason I had to drop NAVCE, I now have another possible solution.

Norton Antivirus on a server? ROFLMAO....Norton is junk to even put on a normal desktop, I wouldn't wish it on anyones server by any means. If you want a REAL antivirus for a server environments, eTrust Antivirus (formerly Innoculate IT) is what you would want...that combined with a router would give your server the security it deserves. As far as Norton, it's been junk for years now...I mean if anything use PC-Cillin 2003 it's even better than Norton by a long shot. Good luck ;)

Everybody has something that works for them. eTrust, PC-Cillin 2003 I would recommend for workstation use. However, The post was for Win2k Advance Server. I will admit, I won't use NAV for a workstation. Just because something works for workstations, doesn't mean it will work for a server and vice versus.

I don't agree. PC-Cillin caused me much serious grief as soon as I installed it - with updates.
I recommend NAV to all of my customers and have installed it many times. It has never given me trouble except occasionally on one of my own machines (which I'm constantly messing with). I run Corporate on a test server (Advanced) and it's been very reliable.
I have heard that eTrust AV is good though.

the only problem i had with NAVCE 7.5 is terminal services. it's a known issue, though. When I log out of a server via term services, the floppy drive will try to scan as if i was right at the desktop. it takes about 10 secs to finally log off. nothing major, but it's kinda of a pain. :(

Norton is still an option, but all they've had for a long time now is their name, as the software has been problematic more and more over the years...but their virus definitions have has held up pretty good. But in all honesty if you're gonna pay for an antivirus for server, I wouldn't spend money on Norton, just my recommendation from experiences. What a couple of people have had problems with on these boards means nothing compared to what really happens on many many servers and workstations in the field. I suggest "borrowing" Norton and seeing what results you get before buying it.

NAV CE 8.0 (SAV CE 8.0) has all those Bugs fixed already
and the SSC management center is 100% better than in 7.5/7.6 :D
the new Client Group feature is simply the best and long awaited option :t
BTW, now the SSC info is much more Accurante compared to 7.5/7.6
:)

Yeah, i know the bugs have been fixed in the newer versions, so I'm not sweating it. it's all up to the fiscal department now. we request stuff and sometimes it takes months before they respond. by that time, 8.5 might be out or something. geez.

Wow, I post a decent software package with excellent capabilities and a very steadfast support department, and I get shot down.
Tell me socialchaos, do you actually work for a living? Or do you just attack random professionals?

McAfee (network associates)
has come a long way since their crappy old software way back then :p
now they are pretty decent
but, you know what's the fuzz?
between the TOP3
1. Symantec (Norton)
2. Trend A.V.
3. Mc Afee
more and more people are liking Trend AV
cuz they have a nicer real time WEB interface management tool etc etc
so Slightly superior to the Symantec SSC management center which basically uses MMC
a buddy of mine working for another Firm they just did the transition from McAfee to Trend
between their evaluation they had Symantec vs Trend
and Trend wont by vote cuz their Centralized managemnt was just that little Tad better :D
besides between Trend and Symantec
each other kinda takes over the other evert year
right now status Symantec is in the lead, last year was Trend, so most likely by next year Trend will be back, and vice versa :)
so Trend and Symante is rather Tied in 1st place and 2nd place :x
and Mc Afee always 3rd
hmm... can some one fix that smiley, plz:t

Ok Logan[TeamX], please inform me where I spoke against your recommendation of Netshield, because I don't remember even mentioning it in my posts. If I'm not mistaken I was referring to Norton in a network/server environment NOT Netshield....please read before you flame. :D
