Hello,
Thank you for taking the time to read this message.
I think this is my second post on this problem, sorry to be a pain in the *%# about this. I seem to get this problem straigntened out and then "The Slooowwww Ghost returns" !
I have two computers. My O.S. is:
Computer #1 - Win98
Computer #2 - WinXP
I am using a Linksys BEFSR41 (4 Port) Router -The modem is a 3 Com - The 10/100 in Computer #1 is an Asante - The 10/100 in Computer #2 is a Linksys.
From the 3 Com modem I have a 5 foot "Belkin" Cat5e cable to the Linksys router's WAN connection receptacle.
From the Linksys router's port #1 I have a 5 foot "Belkin" Cat5e cabe which runs to the Asante 10/100 of Computer #1.
From the Linksys router's port #2 I have a 25 foot "Belkin" Cat5e cable which runs to the Linksys 10/100 of Computer #2.
All Cat5e cables are know to be good
Sometimes I will have a fast Internet connection.
Sometimes I will have a connection that simulates a 56K dial up connection.
Sometimes I will have a connection the simulates an antiquated 300 baud modem connection. It is so slooowwww I could just about fall asleep. These 3 connection speeds happen out of the blue. Fast then sloooowwww than a little in-between, then fast and on and on we go. I often get a "Page not found error" because of the slow connection. My e-mail server times out etc. etc. Then "Bang" the connection is blazing fast.
This is driving me out of my trees. In my last post "ALLGAMER" gave me some great info and a site to download a great program called Net Per Second. It seems I have to use the Net Per Second program to jump start my connection to wake it up. I checked out everything "ALLGAMER" suggested and all checks out fine. But the Ghost returns Fast then Slooowwww back and forth.
If anyone has any answers to what the problem may be It will be very much appreciated. I am not up too much on this stuff.
Could any of you Pro's help me out ?
Even trying to get this post submitted is taking a unbelievable amount of time, I hope it make it to the forum !
Thank you,
Enigma

I'm not sure what other advice you've been given, but here is what I would recommend.

First, get an MTR type program (for those that don't know, MTR or Matt's Trace Route provides a ping and traceroute at the same time)and try reaching some different sites with it, to see what kind of reply times (in ms, lower is better) and packet loss (again, lower is better) you get from the sites. Its quite possible you have some network latency on your ISP service.

Pingplotter (http://www.pingplotter.com) is a good MTR type program. So is WinMTR, which I use more (http://winmtr.sourceforge.net/)

If this doesn't pan out, or even to check further, try taking the router out of the equation, and running one of the pcs at a time right through the modem. This will help determine if the router is at fault, though from what you are saying, it seems more likely to be a service issue.

I say all this knowing not much more than you told me, so if I missed something important, my apologies. If some of it has already been suggested and done, then I didn't mean to be redundant...I just haven't seen the other post that you refer to.

Anyway, I hope some of this helps diagnose the issue.

sounds like some one is calling me :p

here this is the best free tool i've found and used

TCPOptimizer.exe
http://216.239.53.100/search?q=cache:OjNLMZ4tgNoC:cstrike.gamewarriors.c om/downloads/dir.php%3Fdir%3Dmiscfiles+TCPOptimizer.exe&hl=en&ie=UTF-8

is tiny 416 kb

after you get it select Cable or DSL PPOE

Have you started with the basics before you get into playing with settings ?. Just a thought, next time it slows down open the command prompt and type ping 192.168.1.1 and hit enter.
you shouldnt have a delay of more 8ms on the first ping a 1ms on the next three.
What your doing is pinging the router and you shouldnt have any delay there but if you do you now know where to start looking.
Should ping times be normal, you can also go here (http://speedguide.net/Cable_modems/cable_patches.shtml)
and apply the appropriate patches. That might speed ya up a little.

Re: Fast then slooww BroadBand Connection

After you run It

Select the Cable button, or the DSL PPOE button

then hit aply ok, reboot, and see how it goes

Hello AllGamer,
Thank you for all the help with my fast then sloowwww broadband connection, it drives me out of my trees.
I am not to knowledgabel about networking as you can tell.
I downloaded TCPOptimizer but I really do not know what I should be trying to do with it. Right now my connection is fine and then out of the blue it is the slowest connection anyone could amagine.
Could you tell me what I should be trying to do with TCPOpimizer ?
Again, I thank you for you professional help.

Thank you "ALL" very much for the fantastic help.
I appreciate it very much.
I have found something interesting to add to this off and on problem In WinXP - in the system tray- there is an icon that tells me that the 10/100 cable has been disconnected ! -
I blinks back and forth ("Weird') I know for a fact the 10/100 cable is "not" disconnected. Sometime when I am experiencing a very slooowwww connection and getting Page not found errors, I will unplug the Cat5e cable from the 10/100 card and that seems to solve the problem for a while and everything is fine. Then "Bang" here we go again with the simulated 300 baud connection. Look at the screen and wait and wait, watch the frames slooowwwlllyyyy appear on the screen.
When everything is working as it should, all of the suggestions given to me work and check out as they should.
I thank everyone for their input to this problem and again, it is greatly appreciated.

Try running it right to modem and see if it keeps dropping off.

If it does, it may require a driver reinstall on the NIC.
Or, to just reset the tcp/ip.

Go to

Start | run | netsh int ip reset c:\reset.txt *hit enter*

a cmd prompt will pop up, but won't seem to do anything. it will then shut down. when it does, reboot the system...it may help a little.

Is this happening on both PC's or just one?
If it is happening on only on PC have you tried changing the port it is plugged into on the router?
Is your routers network MAC address the same as your Modems or is it using the MAC address of one of your PC’s?
Is this happening when both PC’s are online at the same time or when only one of them is?
What are your router settings DHCP or are you using a static IP’s?
If you are using DHCP on your router how long does it lease the IP for?
Do you have keep connection alive selected in your router settings?
Have you checked your cables to see if they are completely seated and you can not pull them out or wiggle the connector around in the jack?

Try unplugging both your modem and your router for 5 min them plugging them back in one at a time your modem first them the router after your modem comes on line.

Also keep in mind that slow connection speed are not always a problem on your end it could be the server on the other end. Try connecting to a different site like yahoo when it bogs down and if your connection is still slow.

You may also want to contact your ISP and see if there is any special configurations you could make to resolve your issue like default gateways DNS or WINS addresses gateways being a big one.
