They are both good drives. I have the maxtor 30gig 7200rpm ATA66, can be converted to ATA100.
Are you looking for capacity or speed though?
The Fujistu is a 40Gig ATA100 with only a 5400Rpm spin. Bigger drive slower speed.
The Maxtor is a 30Gig ATA66/100 7200Rpm spin. Smaller drive but faster speed.

don't know if this is meaningfull, but have seen posts lately of hi rpm 7200 having the media disintegrate in the drive.

No problems with mine. Haven't had to reinstall anything since Oct 2000, when I first built this system I'm on now.
Alot of media degridation is usually caused from a cpu overclock that is starting to fail, not keeping up with system maintenance (ie: scandisk and defrag) parts of programs getting highly fragmented then eventually written over or cross linked with another program, system registry enlarged by installing and uninstalling programs. Yea, and then there are weak or old hard drives.

Another option comes to mind. I use a 30GB IBM ATA100 HD. On the side I have a USB interfaced 20 GB Buslink HD. I know USB is not the fastest interface, but not only is it a good place to store infrequently used data/programs and to back up files to (I back up 215 MB data each evening), but it's been a life saver transfering large files or lots of data from one box to another. Being hotswappable is handy also.
Good luck!

Maxtor is better out of those two, IMO.
But you know what is better than that? IBM http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

@Brangwen
If you like (portable) solutions (like USB) I would recommend getting a Firewire HD.
Those things are fast as hell! (Firewire supports up to ~400MB/s)! And you can do the same things as with USB (only faster).
