I'm going to hook up a wireless network and I was wondering if it mattered if the card was USB or PCI. I was leaning towards USB beacuse its very easy to install. Is there any performance difference?

yes PCI is faster

USB is just as good, BUT, it's Directly affected by the USB BUGS!

if you have no trouble with your USB devices then you are in luck

but if any of your USB has trouble

then mostlikely the USB NIC will not work either

PCI for sure.

Why are you going wireless for a desktop anyways? I would rather run a cable and use a regular NIC. desktops don't usually move around, so it would be faster and cheaper to get a regular NIC. Just my 1 cent (the IRS is getting the other one :( )

I would seriously suggest you not invest in wireless internet, unless there is simply no other way. I installed it in my father's house, simply becuse he didnt want to do all the wire running, and now the upstairs has problems with dropping connection alot. Downloads get interupted, games lag out, browsing is a pain. I suppose if your going to do the whole "pringels can wireless" route it might be worth the money but I was utterly unimpressed in how fast my father was able to remove $300 from his bank account for a router and usb/pci cards, with very poor results.

Wireless are not bad, but it does take some major Tweaking to make them work "perfectly"

when i first started with mines, using Linksys wireless router / PCI cards

it took me a few runs to have it set up prorperly

partly my fault, and partly Linksys faults too

but after a few drivers/firmware upgrades, now everything is working excellent, and at full 11 Mbps even through many walls and floors :D

by the way, on one of the other treads we also talked about how to get the wireless to work best on 2 / 3 stories high buildings

The reason I wanted a wireless network was because the computer is on the other side of the house, out of a room, down a hallway, around corner, and then straight. A wire would be a huge hassle to hook up. I hope i'm able to hook up and tweak it properly cuz i dont have nearly as much skill as allgamer and people

Thanks!

If it's that far, the signal may not reach or it will be very weak. you need to take into account all interference from walls, floors, etc.

magnetic sources and power lines too

eg: Stereo speakers, subs, power lines, etc
