The two companies signed a 10-year patent-licensing deal, the fourth pact between the companies since 1976. The deal is retroactive to Jan. 1, when the previous agreement expired.

A source familiar with the deal said it is essentially similar to the last one, which calls for Intel to receive royalties from AMD. Intel has patents covering aspects of the x86 instruction set used in processors for Windows-based PCs.

The new deal includes changes to the royalty structure and to AMD's foundry rights, sources said, although neither company would provide further details

Well, as sad as this is, MY take is that Bill Gates ought to be a "Gentleman" and give Apple/McIntosh some royalties for his copying their OS

So I guess the felicitous conspiracy continues. Without AMD, Intel might be the target of anti-trust action. It's in Intel's best interest to keep poor little AMD in business. It's a form of synergism.

Has anyone used a Cyrix CPU in this Millenium? And whatever happened to Zilog? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Billy G. has been heard to say "I make money on every Macintosh sold". That's how Apple's suit against Microshaft worked out.

Well DrVette, perhaps Apple should give some royalties to Xerox, for copying their OS.

This sounds like AMD is just renewing their licensing deal for the MMX instruction set, and possibly buying rights to the SSE instructions as well. I don't see anything sinister in this.

The compaison to the apple-microsoft case isn't valid because microsoft didn't use any apple source code in their OS, and apple can't patent the "look and feel" of their OS. That's basically what the court case decided.

As I type this Roy, I'm using a Cyrix MII 433 with 384mb RAM & 7200rpm HD

Bottom of the line machine, built as cheap as possible.
