I pieced a computer together from spare parts I found in a friends garage. I'm using an old 64 MB DIMM of 66mhz memory on a FIC motherboard, AMD K6-2 on a 100mhz FSB. The system is running fairly smoothly no error messages, etc., but every now or then their is a glitch. Bad start up where it freezes or goes in safe mode, shuts down incorrectly etc. It's running on Win98 (1st edition) because that's what's on the drive. I was just wondering if the memory is causing the instability or it's just that Win98 sucks. I'm fairly certain the rest of the components are solid. I'm planning on getting new memory anyway and install Win2K pro. Just wondering for future systems I might put this 66mhz memory in.
Don't think neither memory nor the Windows is your problem, look somewhere else ...
And putting Win2k on this one ? It's more resource hungry then the Win9x.
Best Regards ...

Yar1182...are you saying that you are running the 66 mhz ram at 100 mhz?
If this is what you are doing, I'm very supprised it works at all. Most of the older 66 class dimms were maybe 60ns or more, and wouldn't run at frequencies above maybe 75 mhz.
Some of the FIC mainboards are picky as the devil about what ram you put in them. I have one of these. Its only 3 years old, and will not run the newer pc133 ram without crashes and lockups.
You will need more than 64 mb of ram to run Win2K Pro...I think 128 mb is about minumum.

Yes i was planing on getting 256 mb of ram before i go to win2k. I really dislike win9x so I sacrafice some speed for reliability anyday. The 66mhz memory is toshiba so it's good quality I've got it running at 100mhz, I think? Anyways I just wonder if this is the root of my problem.
