MEMORY, DDR/SDIMM/SDRAM whats the difference ?

Hello techies :t

I would like to know, whats the difference with MEMORYRAM

whats the PERFORMANCE difference between
512 MB SDIMM
512 MB SDRAM and
512 MB DDR ?

I have 2 computers, all I use one for is Internet surfing and Office XP
the second computer is used by my son to run GAMES and BURN CDs

The motherboards in the computers allows 2 DDR RAM sticks and 2 SDIMM sticks

do I REALLY need to purchase DDRs ?

does one outperform the other ? significantly ?

also, is there a significant difference in PC2700 and PC2100 DDRs ?

the ONLY difference in the systems is the second system has SINGLE BOOT and one harddrive :r

what confuses me is I keep seeing ads and tags that say

DDR SDRAM 128 MB


DDR AND SDRAM? Possible?

DDR means double data rate. the chips are still SD (synchronous dynamic) ram. There are SDR and DDR chips.

DIMM is a dual inline memory module. This is basically the board on which the chips reside.

DDR is faster than SDR, but it's hard to say exactly how much faster your system will be. You could get some DDR and benchmark one system with it versus what you had with SDR.

you dont need to upgrade the memory for either pc. if you onlu use them to surf the net and office work then ddr isnt needed

WHat I had planned to do was

Remove the 512 SDIMM from MY computer ( 1 )
install it into kids computer ( total would now be 1024 MB )

Then I was gonna buy myself two 1024 MB of Ram, I was just wondering if I should go for DDR or SDIMM, but from what I've been reading here, I really don't need to spend DOUBLE the cash for DDR if the difference usn't significant (?)

I think I'll just purchase the SDIMM ( 1024 MB/1 GIG ) for now :D

SD RAM = gramps but why pay nearly the same as DDR for 512mb ? better to just get DDr and a new DDR (double data rate) compatible motherboard which would increase performance more[/b]

512 MB DDR = Fastest , Newest of the bunch but more $$
