It's my understanding that most DSL is ADSL. The "A" stands for asymmetric, different upload and download speeds. They just don't tell you that.
Cable can be good, but it is prone to bottleneck when the whole neighborhood tries to use it at the same time.
A friend of mine purchased 384K/128K down/up aDSL from PacBell. We tried the test servers on dslreports.com and he actually got 1M/128K! Either PacBell goofed and gave him a bigger bandwidth, or the bandwidth can adjust dynamically depending on their user load, similar to what happens with cable.
My @Home cable connection gets about 3M/128K down/up from the same test servers. It might slow to about 1M down during busy times, but it's still faster than my friend's aDSL. It's also more reliable. He seems to lose sync about once or twice a day and has to reset the modem. Of course it could just be a flaky modem.
Now if only I could get faster than 128Kup...

A-DSL = different up and download speeds
S-DSL = up and down are the same
If I remember correctly there was a third kind of DSL but that was "big corporate customers only"

DanU - Pacbell ADSL is 384/128 MINIMUM. Depending on how your line qualifies, you can get up to 1536/128 at no extra charge. My $39.95/mo currently gets me 768/128...
