No, never heard of that happening.
"WINDOWS 98 Se CD-ROM SHATTERING !!!!!!"
I'm sorry, with a title like that I felt almost sure this would be a Linux post; it sounded like an activity at a LUG (Linux User's Group) meeting.
Here's a little tidbid I found on the aopen cdrom faq:
Q: Why was my compact disc smashed in the CD-ROM drive? Is it due to some design flaw or is there any potential safety problem?
A: As the price of optical storage media goes down, the quality of the discs becomes questionable. Sometimes the coating dye (in case of CD-R's) does not serve as a good reflection surface, leading to incompatibility between discs and drives. Sometimes, even worse, the mechnical strength of the plastic cannot tolerate high-speed rotation, especially when there are some cracks (perhaps cannot be spotted with naked eyes. After a certain period of operation at as high as ~10,000 rpm, the discs are prone to break into pieces. Simulation test result in our laboratory can prove that. Once the situation occurs, please return your drive to your nearest AOpen service center for thorough inspection to see if the pick-up head has been damaged, and on the other hand contact the oftware vendor for disc replacement. There is no risk in safety since the drive will automaticallly stop operation as soon as any malfunction is detected.
Maybe microsoft should put warning labels on their cdrom products. OH WAIT... they already do in the form of their company logo http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

on the max pc board there was mention that ages of empires (microsoft) is notorious for self dustruction in CD-Rom's. This is a known issue. Call Microsoft and they'd probably replace it. Something abouted poor quality CD's. They'd probably charge you the $10 for shipping though.

Man this doesn't reflect well for Microsoft. There such a rich and powerfull company yet they skimp on CDR quality? My Win95 CD alwasys spins up and down constantly when ever I use it and that's usually due to a bad burn and the CDROM drive having trouble reading it isn't it. That's pathetic I think, but as long as there a monopoly in the OS market I suppose we're powerless to do anything. I swear linux just keeps looking better and better.

Thanks for the replies folks, it all makes interesting reading.
There is always an inherant risk with a monopoly right enough, until other OS manufacturers get on an even playing field as you know who, all I can suggest to my customers is to duck when using their CDs, or use 100% toughened steel cases http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I've heard of CD's shattering in the drive before...I read about it in a computer tech magazine...apperantly it's caused by microscopical cracks in the disc that make it shatter from the centrifugal force when it spins at high rates...think twice about using discs you've dropped to the floor and such...especially if you use a desktop pc with a fast CD-Rom device...the pieces can hit your eyes or even cut your neck open...
Altho I'm not a big fan of them, Microsoft can not be blamed for this problem. At some point the CD was damaged.
I'm not expert tho.

I think I'll stick with my old 32x cdrom drive...
at least I've never dynamited a disk in it!
Now, my brother's 52x cdrom, when you put some disks in it, sounds like it's going to take off (I wonder how good this is for the rest of the puter, that much vibration?).

Ive seen 2 instances of it, one in a magazine that almost ripped the drawerface off, and another a friend brought over in which the disc was in about 200,000 pieces, emptied all the bits out and he is still using it...

Well mine (Win98 SE CD-ROM) didn't shatter but it was scratched so badly that it is probably gone.
Does anyone know if MS replaces the Disk if you send it to them with a return envelope?

Hi there, i've also read somewhere that along with the tiny invisible cracks as mentioned in other posts, that the labeling on the cd can sometimes cause an imbalance in the cd when spinning. This in turn leads to a wobbling, spinning cd which sounds to me like its just waitin to explode or do something bad...
i have yet to experience it, although i don't really want to!!
sorry about your luck...
and i have no idea if MS would replace the disk, but give it a try...

I saw that problem once, when my friend Altera Max Cd sharted(broke (sp)). It's amazing to see that all the pieces of CD fall apart and of course the CD/DVD drive doesn't work after that.

There was a post about this happening in one of the forums here some weeks ago - can't remember what the heading was or the outcome. Sorry I can't be more helpful!

I bought a copy of Microsoft office 97 pro and when I try to install it the cdrom clicks and bangs picks up speed and slows down untill it throws an error. So I made a copy on a verbatum and it install every time and at a constant speed.
^hyd^--that's good food for thought, and something I hadn't thought about before. I label most of the disks I burn, and I don't use a "stomper". I just eyeball 'em on there.
Perhaps I should start wearing protective headgear until I finally invest the $10 on a stomper, eh?! Thanks!

If you registered your software microsoft does replace shattered CDs at shiipping cost. I paid $3.00 for a replacement Win95 CD a couple of years back. My drive had cut the CD in thirds. It never happened since but its good t oknow
