Hello:

My computer was the subject of a web attack two days ago. It completely disabled my computer. I will now have to reinstall. I am using a backup computer to carry on right now, which I had ready to go, just in case. Hopefully this malicious attack is not related to these events. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sci/tech/newsid_1306000/1306591.stm)

What I want to know is: what hit me and who hit me. Norton couldn't pick up the virus after the event. A scan from the rescue disk, with a full set of definitions, yielded no clues: no virus detected.

Here is what happened and the symptoms. I was surfing the net late at night with no fire wall or virus protection enabled. Next day, I started my computer, without going on line, and began working. After about an hour the computer froze, then, wouldn't reboot. Here is what the virus did: it destroyed the directory structure of drive c: within the C:\windows directory only; it specifically attacked IE favorites and the outlook express directories, erased .BPM files in the windows directory, erased systems files by altering the system directory, erased win.com and user.dat specificlly and left system.dat intact. It also left some strange, garbled files in C:\windows.

Has this happened to anyone else? Does this virus look familiar to anyone? All I can say is: I am mad as hell.
