trouble

Hi,
I need some help on a system I am replacing the mobo on.
Installed new mobo Gigabyte GA-7VAXP in the case after installing cpu(xp1800+)and heatsink/fan.
Installed all cards.vid,hdd controller,usb card.
Powered up the pc but only got the fans(cpu and Mobo) to turn about one revolution the nothing,LED for power to the ram slots on.
started pulling the cards one by one and retried booting after each removal, same result.
Took mobo out of case and tried to boot it,same result.
Swapped psu while board is still out of case, same result.
the cpu and mobo fans turn about one revolution each time no matter what I try.
What am I overlooking here bet its basic?
Any help would be much appreciated.

cheers

If I remember correctly your "trouble" started when you replaced or cleaned you HSF.

It seems to me that you still have the same problem.
I suggest that you check again that the HSF is seating correctly on the CPU.
I say this because it seems like the system is starting momemtarily only to be shut down by the overheat protection built into the M.B
Take the M/B out of your case again and look under the HSF and check for actual contact.
Another problem may be too much grease, or even having the HSF on backwards.

your 100% correct smeg thats when it started however at that time the fans did spin up(hsf and mobo)but I couldnt get the sucker to post. This is a new board I went and got today.

the heatsink is sitting correctly on the cpu its not one of those ones with the stepped edge on the bottom but totally flat instead, made from copper.

I only have the slightest film of grease on it as well.In the meantime I will go back and triple check.

Downloaded the manual for your board, can't see anything you may have missed except,
Set system bus to 133Mhz. which i'm guessing you already did.
It also only supports 4x and Greater AGP and must be 1.5 volt.
You can easily fry a board if using an incompatible card??
Similar with the ram, is the ram a carry over from your last system? May need to check it is OK as well. I notice a detailed list of compatible modules.

Just a few ideas.

thanx smeg much appreciated,
yeah bus is at 133Mhz,cpu clock on auto.
vid card is a GF4Ti4200 think AGP is 8x.

Try another keyboard. There was a thread recently where the guy changed keyboards and his problem went away. Also, I had a motherboard (yeah, my free one) that didn't like 2 known good keyboards but liked a third one.

Couldn't hurt, so give it a try.

thanks for the suggestion but thats not the prob.

I have the board on a bench with only the ram and vid card installed. Its like its got an auto protect feature that shuts the system down if there is a heat issue/hsf not working or not plugged in but those two things are fine.

Well Trouble, looks like it can only be either of two things.
1 ram
2 cpu.

Sure u didn't cook the CPU with the first board??
Sure hope not.

I hope I didnt either smeg.
Ive installed lots of heatsinks before without a hitch so I'm still hoping the board is a lemon and the old one is really dead.could be a coincidence.

having never come across a dead cpu,is the hsf and the mobo fan spinning up for a fraction of a second before stopping a usual symptom of that? same goes for a ram chip?

cheers

trouble, i'm too familliar with your troubles....somethings to try if you haven't already. pay close attention to your fsb dip switches, try them in different positions, the manual is confusing...you may want to manually set your multiplier dip switches as well and force your clock speed....turn the board over and make sure nothing is grounding it and lastly, please tell me the fan for the processor in connected to the fan1 cpu header LOL.....if that doesn't help......i'm lost....good luck
