Did you ever think about this:
In the future, the way to go is fibre optic computersystems. Imagine a motherboard with the speed of light busses...Imagine that your internet connection is a fibre cable right into you machine and that your harddrive could write and read at the same speed. Imagine the quality of streaming media. Real-time virtual reality in photorealistic resolutions...and so on... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

The future will be as follows
Optical vs. Organic

Both technolgies exist now. Organic technology is still in the expiremental stages though.

Right now we're approaching the theoretical limit of solid-state technology. At some point we'll have to go to fully optical/holographic or organic processing and storage. Both are faster and more efficient than current transistor technology. They're also more difficult to engineer with existing technology.

I think the future will be a mixture of optical and organic, plus a great deal of minimization.

Organic life is too fragile

Hmmm... not if it can repair itself! (could get scary!!)

We have joints and heart valves that usually last 70+ years, yet we struggle to get prosthetics to last much more than 10. Our bones re-model if the stresses change, yet a steel bar weakens; our muscles develop and adapt to suit the type of work required of them, yet a motor overheats and burns out.... so what about an organic graphics card that re-models to adapt to your violent UT sessions? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif Overclock your CPU... just add growth hormone http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

When you look at the diverse places that organic life is found, it is actually amazingly tough!

Yeh but Krusty what about the ethical issues involved, is it fair to put it through a violent UT session, that could be classified as abuse. I mean it'd be a living, thinking being. Then there's others issues as well. Now someone could clone you computer entirely, brings up whole new piracy area. Hmmmmm, wonder how intel would multi-plier lock an organic CPU?

Good point, dude!!!

We'll have abuse of RAM, Graphics card's rights and CPU neglect cases http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Yeh how mad would you be if they declared you unfit and put your cpu up for adoption. Hehe, computers would then have to R-rated too. The kids couldn't see that naughty interfacing of the cpu and ram, what about a menage a twou between ram,cpu and the graphics card. Lol, what if you got a promiscuous graphics card that would work with any other system. Man I could just go on and on with this stuff.

Actually, computers are already bringing down the morality in society. (One day I'm going to write a geek comedy sketch on this http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif)

Think about it.

We have many male/female connections throughout the computer.
If you try to plug the same gender together, it doesn't work (the one moral thing).
However, you just stick a gender changer on it, and viola! Decaying society, I'd say.

Then you look at the operating system.
Parents spawn child processes. (this is good)
However, parent processes can kill child processes. (this is not good)
Not only that, but if you kill a child process which has become a parent process as well, you subsequently kill all child processes right down the tree. (No comment necessary)

Network cards can be put in promiscuous mode, any computer can be connecting to any other with the right "hardware," and the voyeuristic types even will let their computers run WITH THEIR CASES OFF.

Yes, it's true. Computers ARE responsible for the decay of society. IT's a blam shame.

I figure any time now - that last vital node will come online.. and the net will become self-aware - and then we're doomed.

Ever read The Moon is a Harsh Mistress?

Hey Joel if a network card in promiscuous mode is bad imagine a modem, it's designed to interface with hundred of millions of other modems around the world without any exceptions simutaneously , imagine my PC interfacing with a millions of Macs, it's blasphemy, I won't stand for it! It's going to it's room to think about what it's done.....right after I finish this post.

Hello

If Bush does not sign the Kyoto protocol – our future will be 100% organic.

Has anyone heard of Nano Bots?

Yes
http://www.zyvex.com/nanotech/MITtecRvwSmlWrld/article.html .
I got this from another brainstorming thread a while ago, I had put it in favourites and forgot about it, have to finally read it through when I get some free time.

Optical would be nice. Just think, no heat(maybe), no moving parts, and no water ruining PCs. Cool. Then we'll figure out how to store things as radiation (long away future). Then things would get interesting...

organic= terrible idea i think. could u imagine a organic computer than some idiot puts ai in it and what does every organism want to do... become dominant, and with always on connections to the organic computer it will recieve infinite information and before you know it some dude will be asking you to take a red or blue pill!
just a thought
but i am warning you!

It'll be organic though, so you could hit it with a stick and say "respect my authoritah".
