Had to re-read---you were speaking of 2 different drives im assuming---
Anyways---im using a NEW AOpen 16X dvd drive (AOpen DVD1640 Pro) that is great for 90$, its a 16X40 of "slot in" design and quieter then my almost silent Hitachi 12X, the specs ive seen show it as being able of extremely high ***SUSTAINED*** transfer rate, and rated pretty high... along with a 99$ Plextor (Iomega branded) 12X10X32 Burnproof CDRW...
GOOD CHEAP STUFF!!!

Click here (http://www.geocities.com/araaraara2001/speedocd.avi) for a program to test the actual speed of your cdrom. Rename it from .avi to .exe. A good disk to use is a win98 install cdrom.

Avoid this one at all cost go for an ASUS one (forgeting the model number)!

24x and 32x ...
i don't trust cd drives that spin faster than 32x... except those expensive TrueX drives...
those are nice.
i have never seen a reliable 52x acer/creativelabs/etc... cd-rom though... they always croak on burns after a week or so...
