i just found out i can get dsl at my house now. is it really worth $40 to get the 384k download or not? will i find the speeds that much faster than my 56k dial up. if so would it be advisable to keep my extra phone line or should i just use the dsl line for internet and phone use to save the $15 for the extra line. all help is appreciated

I'm paying $80/mo for 384X384.
I will never dial up again.

Once you have tried DSL or Cable for internet use, you will beat yourself tryng to figure out how you made it through life with a 56K modem. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Can you get cable in your area?It might be
cheaper/faster,but if $40 is in your budget
go for it.

Going to switch to DSL soon - 80$ for 1280(!)x128 ...
And one line is enought - even when you're on the Net, the phone line is free.
Best Regards ...

I had dsl service for about a year, when I moved to another apartment, they wanted me to wait 20/25 days to move the account. That's when I decided to give cable a try, one of my best decisions: Cable is way faster plus you dont have to deal with the telco (verizon in my case). Having said that, if my choice was between dsl or dialup, dsl wins hands down.

we pay for 384/128 adsl through swbell but our download speeds hit between 1.5 and 2 gbps all the time. even when we lived in a different location and the lines were dirty we still couldn't figure out how we made it without dsl.
good luck on your decision.

I've got DSL with Verizon up here by Portland, OR and really can't imagine going back to just dial-up.
One problem that I've noticed though is that sometimes there is a lot of line noise on the phone line. I've noticed this happen a few times, both when I was downloading something and when the system was off. And yes, I'm using the filters for my phones. Anybody else encounter this?

Our telco states that the MAX for our adsl setup is 800 & change upstream, and 1600 and change download. Of course, we haven't hit that yet, but I would love to find a server that would spit it out that fast, just to see what our "actual" limit is.
But go back to 56k dial-up by "choice" No-Way!
It's nice to be able to measure download MB's in seconds rather than minutes!
We love it.
Take care, and good luck.

I would suggest finding out who your ISP's DSL provider will be!
For instance, our ISP was XO communications (formerly Concentric) and they were using Northpoint Communications for their DSL provider http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1004-200-5508467.html
Any questions? lol (after reading article)
Thankfully we hadn't transferred our primary Inet connection from our (horrible) ISDN over to the DSL line before we got shut down.
DSL providers are in rough times for the most part so make sure you ask your ISP who their provider is, and do some homework on them. There are some ISP's who do their own, so definately stick with the big guys in this matter http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

the dsl is through my local tele co. they have installed all of the upgrades themselves and they own all of the lines so i dont think they will go anywhere. it is through TXU communications ( www.lcc.net (http://www.lcc.net) ). they seen to be going slow and making sure there is enough interest to make it worth their while to do the dsl.

$40 is a good price, seems to be the norm. I see some posts @ $80 (WOW). It is much faster than 56k. Dump the extra line and dial up on a free-bee if something keeps you from using the cable connection.

its night and day....ive had cable for two years now and i will never go back to 56k. the cool thing is, canadians have it really good with high speed internet. my price is $35.95CDN, which roughly translates to $23US a month. ive gotten up to 1.2MB/s(thats megabytes), but average around 100-400KB/s....and my upload is capped at 48KB/s(or 384kbps).

had dsl, never did work. had phone line people come in, had dsl people look at it, had pc repair men work on it, nothing. lots of wasted money. when dsl was taken out, pc was totally screwed. had to spend a lot more money to get it going and sound is still out.
