Ok, so I have this old computer: AMD K6-2 450, FIC VA503+ mb, 256 MB SDRAM, GF4MX, yada yada running an upgraded version of Windows XP (from Win98). The hard has been reformatted countless times and even at it's "best" reformatted state it was prone to spontaneous resets and crashing windows. I purchase a Shuttle AK32A mb and an Athlon 2000+ cpu, install it (without reformatting the HDD), and then flip on the switch. Next thing I know, XP starts recognizing everything. I didn't think it would fly b/c I usually reformat after putting in a new mb, but not the computer works flawlessly as far as I can tell. I know my old mb is a dinosaur now and that was probably the source of all evil (with endless 3rd party drivers, out of date bios, etc.), but the upgrade was as painless as could be. Am I dreaming?

It should work fine.
Is ACPI enabled?

Also on your old FIC VA503+ mb if you were using ACPI that usually makes them unstable. But it would be a great board to run linux.

XP is indeed easy to upgrade. I went from an Intel P3T on an Asus mobo to an Athlon 1900+ on an MSI Ultra without a hiccup. It's still using both ACPI and APIC too!

This is the way PnP was meant to be. Linux can't touch that, but then again, Linux didn't have any say in how the hardware was made. It's about time that MS used their leverage for our good. :)
