I read the manual, it says use crossover cable from modem to router. then use regular ethernet cable from router to computers. My modem is Motorola 4200 and router BEFSX41.

will there any differences on using regular ethernet cable(straight) and crossover? like can't assign the ip address to the Router, slow down, disconnect, etc...
i don't have crossover cable.

and where can i get firmware update for my modem. i heard that cable company won't provide it since not all technical know about it.

yes there is a difference. lines 1 and 2, and lines 3 and 6 are crossed, hence the name.

does the router have a switch on the back to toggle between patch and crossover?

Actually, you can use a crossover cable on the router if you connect it to the Uplink port. Otherwise, use a patch cable in a standard port.
