T-Bird,
I can't wait to overclock. I am saving to build another computer that will be specifically for overclocking :)

It's a wait and see for me. I agree w/ Tbird... those 2100 B's are irresistable now. Imagine what one will go for next month. :D

You can overclock a 2100 to barton 3100 speeds?

According to pricegrabber at
http://amdzone.pricegrabber.com/search_gen.php/form_keyword=athlon%2520xp%25203000%252B/topcat_id=1/found=2/ut=d156bbfbfbc55807
the AMD ATHLON XP 3000 512K CACHE 333MHZ FRONT BUS 2.16MHZ is socket A , so i guess that means all the new ones under 3000 will be socket A also

Man, I was hoping there would be a 3700+ Barton. And what happened to AMD's prices? Yields must be really low... For $571.00 I might as well go intel.

Intel currently owns over 75% of the cpu market :( , I guess thats why they have to raise prices to make up for losses but I dont really think that would help , it would only make more people switch over to intel
Some others might blame prices on the recent team-up with IBM :p

That is exactly what I was thinking about causticVapor and Mystical_Night. In my eyes Intel has been pulling ahead of AMD lately, and now I think they are going to even more :( Thats just the way I am seeing the future to be anyways.

OK guys. I'm looking to get an Athlon XP of 2200 or so. And I was hoping to buy this as a bundle. Are the prices for this or the other XP's going to come down when the Barton's come out? And are the Barton's that much better or what?
dragflameson
01-26-2003, 06:51 PM
I guess the bartons are pretty much going to be the same speeds as the XPs are now, and yes, all the XP prices should drop a fair amount :) 2200's arn't good to o/c with though, get a 2100 and push it wayyy up!

Would you suggest getting something higher than a 2100? I don't want to spend a ton of money though. I was thinking about getting a MSI board to go with that processor. And some DDR333.

nathan_m_2005,
Until you actually overclock something you really don't know how great it is. Any CPU over the 2100 isn't worth getting if you want to overclock because you can't really get much more speed out of them.
T-Bird got his XP2100 running at XP3100 speeds! if you read all above. 2100's are really cheap and will cost even less after the Bartons come out, and you can o/c them to 26, 2800, speeds and up... and that FOR FREE!
Think of it like this, you currently have an XP 2100 and you want to upgrade to a 2600. That is going to be almost a $200.00 upgrade! How would you like to get that 2600 for free? Well just overclock it and you will!
If you do not wish to overclock than by all means, save your money up until the Bartons are released and then buy the fastest XP you can afford.
Hope this helps,
Drag

And also, with an MSI board and a couple sticks of DDR333 you can defiantly o/c, after you invest in a after market HSF which arn't too expensive.

Remember. Not all XP2100's will OC like mine. The ones that are being overclocked from 500-750mhz are the Thouroughbred B core CPU's, mainly the AIUGB, and AIUHB steppings, made in weeks 48,49, and 50.
So all you that are running T-Bred XP2100's, CHECK YOUR CHIP NUMBERS!!!! You may have one of the best OC'ing CPU's that AMD has put into circulation!!!!!!!

H ere is a real newbie question...Other than the fsb, what is the difference between the Palimino, and the Barton? Thanks, and let the flames begin.

Its about time we got some confirmation on the Barton's appearance... I wanna be able to maximize my current motherboard (EPoX 8k3A+) to its fullest potential, then keep it around for a year or two before building my next "ultimate machine" I think i'll save myself the $200+ and get the 2800+ version, and use the money I saved on another 512MB stick of Corsair XMS memory. As far as their prices... I say that if AMD comes through and these CPU's perform on par with their INTEL counterparts, then the prices are justified, if not... Well, then my next system might just have to be Intel based.
samdbugman, a more fair comparison would be the newer tbred's vs the Barton... If you want to compare it to the Palimino, well the difference are... the Palimino uses .18 micron vs the .13 of the Barton, Palimino runs on a 266MHz bus vs. 333, the much higher clock speeds, and the Bartons have twice the cache as the Palimino.
Now the difference between the Barton, and the 333FSB T-bred's are that the Barton has twice the cache.

bartons = 512kb cache ,
Clawhammer etc etc = 1mb cache
thats about one of the other main differences

Doesn't the new series of AMD chips have a different pin aray than the Thbreds? Will mean new MB plus the processor?

No, I don't think so, I'm pretty sure they are going to all be the same sockets and everything... easy upgrade :)

it can be...... i know for the asus deluxe board allready is compatible wit barton.... that one of the reason i wants it
kt333 is the chipset on the mobo... basicly means it can run a 333 bus (166*2) which is what the new fsb is.... barton for now is 166 but ive heard they might be goin up 2 200mhz soon..... the main problem wit the 200mhz fsb is jedec is taking their sweet time.... jedec is the standards organization

I am such a dumb a$s. I knew that kt333 was a chipset! (I'm just stupid and didn't make the connection) And on top of that, my own ASUS motherboard has it! LoL
I didn't really understand the 2nd half of your post MiKeY. No motherboards support 200MHz FSB and the Jedec organization are the people who design that?
Thanks,

jedec is the ppl who create the standards for pcs.... well atleast some components.... as u know ddr pc3200 (200 mhz) has been out for a while but its not standerdized yet.... thats wuts giving alot of problems to these companys trying to build products..... that should be resolved soon though cuz amd and intel r planing a release soon... here is there site jedec (http://www.jedec.org/) .... i hope this cleared up some of the confusion

BiG MiKeY,
Yeah that cleared up some confusion now :) It's just like that one for networking, ASCII or something like that (I took CISCO class last year, I forgot).
Thanks,
