I have 1 CD-ROM (24x) and 1 CD-writer (2x/2x/6x)in my comp.
The writer is functioning "normally" but the cd-rom is giving me troubles.
It doesn't spin down when I put the eject button and the CDs come thrashing out at high speed (often destroying the CD).
Just this weekend I wanted to do a clean reinstall of WinME (Update) and the setup said it need the other (original) Win9x CD.
I had the WinME CD in the Writer (I am carefull!) but I put the Win98se CD in the CD-ROM. Everything was fine the setup progressed and then I ejected the Win98se CD and it came out flying! The CD looks like hell.
Is there a way to force the CD-ROM to spin down before ejecting or maybe soemthing is broken in there that can be fixed?

Also do you know if I can send the scratched Win98SE CD to MS and will they replace it(free of charge?) ?

Try to clean your CD-ROM with plain lense cleaner disc.
Don't know if MS gonna replace your CD, it's not in warranty aggreement http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

1. You mean one of these lens cleaner discs they sell at K-Mart/Walmart?

2. I don'T know it either but I once heared from someone that they do replace discs that are scratched or otherwise unreadable...
well, otherwise I will just throw it away. it just seems a waste to me.

If I where you I would toss the CD ROM drive. Drives are too cheap nowadays to be wasting time with them. Especially when they are trashing your discs.
