Mine does that when running mirc and only when downloading. Sometimes I get the blue screen saying driver IRQ too high. And then it proceeds to dump memory and eventually reboot or it just reboots right away. It never ever even crashed or froze up unless mirc is downloading. I tried all kinds of things. I just installed win2k and all the latest drivers and mirc. Still did it. I do hear a funny noise coming from the HD the sec before it reboots. Like a click.

Try these suggestions -

1. Click START - RUN. In the dialog box, type Msconfig to run System Configuration Utility. From the GENERAL tab, click ADVANCED. Look at the list. See DISABLE FAST SHUTDOWN. Is this line CHECKED. If so, leave it alone and exit. If it is not checked, check it and click OK. Restart your computer, see if it works.

2. Enter the POWER MANAGEMENT SETUP of your BIOS. With your motherboard manual, check out the settings. Are they correct. Adjust at will, if necessary. Save changes, exit and restart. See what happens.

3. Get on the Internet. Go to www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate.asp. (http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate.asp.) In the RECOMMENDED UPDATES section, click Windows 98SE Shutdown Supplement and Windows 98SE Mapped Drives Shutdown Update and install, following on-screen instructions. If this step does not put you back on the right track, try this next suggestion.

4. Flash your BIOS with an upgrade. If this still does work, consider this -

5. Change your power supply. It may be malfunctioning.

Is it overclocked? That sounds like a bad o/c problem to me. Had an old computer that always did that, had no idea why, turns out the previous owner had o/c'd it and it wasn't able to take it. It would restart doing nothing, or if you were using it, just suddenly black and *beep* of the post.
