Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Win98SE won't shut down

Every now and then (increasing), after
"clicking" <Start><Shut Down><Shut Down>, the Windows hourglass appears on-screen for a few seconds (over the desktop), but then disappears leaving Win98SE running. If I
re-click the shut down procedure again, Win98 will then go thru it's regular shut down routine.

Any ideas?

jmatt...........great link! Got nothing to loose by trying the suggestions.

I'm, however, uncertain the diagnostic suggestions will find my problem, since they focus on PCs that "hang" (become unresponsive) during shut down. My system doesn't "hang", it simply returns me to a fully functional desktop.

Try these suggestions -

1. Click START - RUN. In the dialog box, type Msconfig to run System Configuration Utility. From the GENERAL tab, click ADVANCED. Look at the list. See DISABLE FAST SHUTDOWN. Is this line CHECKED. If so, leave it alone and exit. If it is not checked, check it and click OK. Restart your computer, see if it works.

2. Enter the POWER MANAGEMENT SETUP of your BIOS. With your motherboard manual, check out the settings. Are they correct. Adjust at will, if necessary. Save changes, exit and restart. See what happens.

3. Get on the Internet. Go to www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate.asp. (http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate.asp.) In the RECOMMENDED UPDATES section, click Windows 98SE Shutdown Supplement and Windows 98SE Mapped Drives Shutdown Update and install, following on-screen instructions. If this step does not put you back on the right track, try this next suggestion.

4. Flash your BIOS with an upgrade. If this still does work, consider this -

5. Change your power supply. It may be malfunctioning.

Most of it is covered above but M$ has a detailed troubleshooting guide to this in their knowledge base: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q238/0/96.ASP
