hello
can Linux 8.0 autodetect USB devices during the installation stage? i already have windows xp as my primary OS and i want to have Linux as another OS on my USB hard disk... during previous installation, Linux does not detect my USB hard disk. how should i do to install linux on my USB hard disk?

thanx

Since Linux installs from start-up I would think that your Bios has to be able to detect your USB hard drive from the start in order to be able to do the install. It probably won't detect your USB hard drive until it is installed.

I don't know of any operating system that can be booted from a USB drive.

Your USB HDD can only be used by LINUX after you have installed LINUX in the Local Internal HDD

RED HAT 8.0 does work great with USB, but not for a BOOTable OS, only as a Extra Storage HDD

Actually I know some of the latest phoenix and award bios releases do support booting from a usb hdd. It depends if those bios updates are compatible with your motherboard.

Here, I found this afterwards USB boot (http://www.addonics.com/support/faqs/usb_troubleshooting_resources.asp) But I had been looking into it after I was posed a question about knoppix and booting from a ramdrive.

The real problem is the OS. Example:

You're setting up XP. You have BIOS set to boot from USB second.

You boot from the CD and text-mode starts. You have to press F6 to load storage drivers. You do so.

Now what? USB is not a viable storage adapter in any OS that I know of.

maybe then, ther is an apple macintosh advantage here...becuase with a certain key combo on a macinktosh, you an booth off of a FIREWIRE drive...
I've seen it done.

but i'm not sure about other OSes and or USB....hmmmmm?

however, Linux can utilize external disk drives to install the OS. (firewire)
