Should I buy an AMD cpu now, or should I wait until their new chip comes out and hope prices fall. If Athlon Thunderbirds were just a little cheaper, then I'd pick on up.

New technology will always continue to come out, and prices on the older stuff will always continue to fall. You could spend your whole life waiting for prices to fall just a little more.

If your old computer no longer does the job for you, then upgrade now. There's lots of great values on processors and motherboards out right now. Set your budget, then do some research to find out what is the best system you can put together with the money you have to spend.

I know that prices are always falling, but I am hoping that they fall more if the athlon becomes "obsolete" when the new amd cpu is introduced. I'm looking for any athlon thunderbird that costs $60US. I haven't seen one yet. I hope that will change soon.

I agree. You can wait forever for prices to fall, and they will never stop falling. As a general rule I've found that waiting longer nets you nothing because there is always better/faster/cheaper coming out daily. Do however take advantages of temporary accelerated price drops such as sales, rebates, etc.

One last point: if you're gonna wait, RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH! I researched for many months before I made a significant upgrade and looking at the parts I bought compared to what I thought I was going to buy I'm happy I researched my stuff!

araaraara, I'd just get a Duron 700, overclock it to 900-1000, and THEN wait for the athlons to drop in price http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif. But chances are that you'll be satisfied with the Duron till the K8 comes out.

That's kind of what I was thinking of doing DanU, but I'd hated to have a good duron sitting around if I were to get an athlon. By the time I would buy and athlon, the duron would cost like $30. Who would want to buy a used duron when they can get a new one for cheaper? I don't think that building another system for the duron would be an option for like another year.

I agree with the colleagues who wrote, in effect: "Waiting will net you nothing." I know a couple of guys who live near me and they are always "waiting." They have no system to enjoy now, they're just waiting. Get a good deal now and enjoy the system now. Everything is an antique next week, and hey, it's only money! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

It doesn't matter when you buy. It will always be cheaper "next month". Sometimes you just have to put a stake in the ground and buy.
