Hi......

When I move the cursor over an image file while in windows explorer, (.gif, .bmp, etc) I get a preview image. I like this, as it makes it easier to decide which image to "open".

My problem is, that this works on virtually every image file type EXCEPT .jpg, .jpeg, and .pic - .pict files. I can live without the .pict files, since they are Mac's, and I rarely run across them.

However, I would like to "enable" this feature for .jpg's and .jpeg's.

Can anyone help me to do this?

Thanks for any input.

Do you have a graphics program like Adobe pagemaker that activly supports jpg images ?
If you don't you won't see a preview.
Hope this helps

What feature allows you to see previews by moving cursor over the file?

Anyway, you can use Quick View to view .jpg, you must associate it. Use Shift + right click and Open With... Quick View (if QV is installed).

Or, you can download ThumbsPlus which is a great little program that will allow you to view in thumbnails. It's easily found thru a search engine.

I think what you're talking about is making the actual image the icon for the image. Windows can do this, but it chews up CPU time. JPEG is one of the toughest on a CPU because it is a very high compression algorithm. I guess Microsoft figured we'd never have CPUs fast enough to decode a bunch of JPGs all right at once, so they left it out.

In reality though, it'd probably heavily slow down your use of Explorer. Sure, it'd be nice, but even at 550 MHz, my CPU can't do as good as I'd like with a directory of just BMP files.

Strange. I forget what I have installed, but I get previews of JPEGs. I'm not sure if it is Ulead Photoimpact SE or what. I'll have to puzzle this one out now, I'm curious.

Oh, and if you set Win98 to single click interface, moving the cursor over a file selects it. That would be the same as clicking on a bmp file for the rest of us. That is, I assume, how grandslammer has his machine setup.

One more thing. The feature we are talking about here is the strip along the left side of a "My Computer" window, where you can see a preview of .bmp files, and file size/etc info for other files.

Oh, thanks for clearing that up 800XL. I don't run the web-ified interface. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif I prefer the simplicity and sheer speed of the toned down original Win95 interface. I do really miss the original Win95 explorer with its instant popup after hitting Win+E. Now I have a 3-4 second delay before it shows up. Feels like an eternity. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Yes 800XL, you've got me pegged. That's exactly what I'm talking about! I have my windoze set up for single click, so when I move cursor over an item, it is selected. This is when the preview is generated in the left side of the right explorer window.

Like I said, I have .gif previews, I have .bmp previews, I even have .tif previews, but no .jpg previews. And, the bad thing is, most of my scanned images (at least 95%) are .jpg's.

Anyway, thanks for all the input, and if anyone has a solution to this, please forward.

Thanks for everything

oh and by the way, I run polyview for viewing image files. I have it associated with all images, because it opens much quicker than any other program I've used, especially quick view.

Thanks again
